Disposal
We offer a disposal service for large domestic appliances (cookers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers), where we'll collect your old appliance at the same time as delivering your new one. See individual product pages for details; the price is £9 per item.
To check if our disposal service is available for your old appliance or to find an installation company for a new appliance, please enter the full postcode of your delivery address on the product description page.
If you purchase our disposal service for your old appliance:
- It must be disconnected from the electricity and/or water and drainage supply. Tumble dryer vent hoses must also be disconnected.
- If a gas appliance, it must be disconnected by a registered GasSafe engineer.
- Any excess water must be emptied from the machine, i.e. washing machines, condenser tumble dryers, dishwashers.
- Fridges and freezers must be emptied of contents, fully defrosted and dry.
Installation
Any installation carried out by installers whose details are provided by John Lewis is covered by the contract between you and the installer. In the event of any queries or problems arising from work carried out by the installers, you should contact the installer concerned.
We strongly advise that you arrange for your installer to call the day after scheduled delivery at the earliest, since we are unable to guarantee a delivery time of day.
Recycling of electrical and electronic equipment
Since 1 July 2007, the UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations allow members of the public to deposit old electrical and electronic items at recycling sites across the UK, free of charge.
Electrical and Electronic Equipment is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, increasing by at least 5% each year. The public dispose of over 1.2 million tonnes of waste every year in the UK, and landfill sites are now reaching full capacity. Much of this waste can be recycled, and the resources recovered to make new consumer goods. The WEEE regulations aim to reduce the quantity of electrical and electronic items disposed of in this way, and will encourage everyone to play a part in protecting our environment for future generations.
As retailers of electrical and electronic products, both John Lewis and Waitrose fully support this regulation, and we have joined together with some of the UK’s leading electrical retailers to create and fund a new body - the Distributor Take-Back (DTS) scheme - which is helping to develop a new UK recycling network for waste electrical products. Over the next three years, the scheme will make available more than £10 million to establish and upgrade recycling facilities across the UK, so that customers can conveniently recycle old electrical appliances.
To find your nearest recycling sites for waste electrical and electronic products, contact your local council, or visit www.recycle-more.co.uk and type your postcode into the recycling bank locator.
Our buyers are also aware of how this legislation impacts the products they select, and all our own-brand products which fall under the WEEE regulations are clearly identifiable with a crossed out wheelie-bin symbol. As a producer of own-brand electrical products, we are also members (based on our market share in 2006) of a producer compliance scheme which will take responsibility for recycling waste electrical and electronic products.
