Q & As

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great but not extreme. Our ISPs Super Hub is described by some, charitably, as. 'Get up and go.' That's being polite. It's range was poor and if you connected more than three devices (and we have a minimum of 7 at any one time) then the speeds were slower than the M25 on a Friday night. I've been using Macs for over 20 years so I expected easy. I wasn't expecting the IP address to change from to but it did. This wouldn't normally be a problem but my networked printer baulked at the change and I had to make a rare call to Apple to sort out the network. It ended up being a IVP4 IPV6 conflict. Not an Extreme problem as such but beyond the instructions supplied. The wifi range is not hugely better but it is much faster, totally reliable and we've had 16 devices connected at one time with no degradation of service. It's an expensive thing but no more frustrating wireless dropouts. 07 April 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Considerably improved home WiFi We started to have drop-outs from the modem/router supplied by our ISP. This became almost a daily occurrence, where I had to manually switch the channel being used in order to sort out the problem. The ISP advised me to get a better router (pretty annoying!) - as the three of us were accessing the Internet wirelessly, and sharing bandwidth. After reading some reviews, I bought the Airport Extreme, which I knew would be compatible with our MacBook Air and iPads. Setup was easy, and we have not had any drop-outs since. I'd give it 5* except that it's expensive, and also because - oddly - an app I have shows the WiFi signal is slightly weaker than on the original cheapo router - but no drop-out problems now as the signal comes via both the Airport and the 'old' router. 07 January 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by Could be Handy Didn't work for me no difference at all. I sent it back. 07 January 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by plugged it in, set it up, and it has worked without problem I used this device to extend my wifi for fast reliable reception downstairs in my house. It was easy to set up from my Mac and has delivered exactly what I was looking for. It doesn't look like a regular router, which is also a plus! 23 September 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Even better range than 4th generation Extreme My bungalow is long and narrow and although my 4th generation Airport Extreme (flat square profile) did reach each end of the house the Mb/sec broadband wireless broadband speed was less than half the 70MB/sec plus I got in rooms near my BT Home HUB 5 with Infinity 2. I haven't got any of the latest ac wireless devices but this 6th generation Extreme with its improved antennae now delivers the full 70 plus over most of my house using the 5Ghz band. I'm using my older Extreme to extend my network to the garden and an Airport Express just to join the network to enable internet to a TV. I had a bit of trouble initially trying to extend my network as I selected the option DHCP and NAT on router mode of the new Extreme not realizing at first that my HUB was providing all the IP addresses and that both my Extremes should be in Bridge mode. My older Extreme wireless broadband had better range in the 2,4Ghz band than the 5, whereas the new Extreme has a more powerful range at 5Ghz. 28 February 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Apple Airport Extreme Nicely made and solid design. One big flaw from my point of view. Wanted a wireless extension to my BT Hub 5. But the Extreme cannot join any non-Apple wireless network and must be hardwired to the existing modem (BT Hub 5). I had wanted to use my BT Hub 5 and extend the signal. The end result - it physically must sit next to the modem with no extension of the wireless reception to the dead zones of the house (the BT Hub 5 is one of the better ISP supplied modems and is pretty powerful). I had foolishly thought the Extreme could sit elsewhere in the house well away from the modem and work as an extender to push the wireless reception into the dead zones. I even found the Extreme was no more powerful than the Hub 5 so could not use the Extreme's signal in preference to the Hub 5 signal. Therefore the Extreme was useless for what I wanted. The Apple literature makes no mention of this limitation (why not?). You only discover when open the box and read the instructions on hardwiring to the modem. But can't fault John Lewis - a great retailer - returned the product and got a refund. 29 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Easy to install, very good range I choose John Lewis to get the airport just to have the peace of mind in case something might go wrong. I set-up the Airport Extreme in bridge mode using my iPhone and Airport Utility which was an easy process. Because of the dual band, now even my old N devices have improved wifi speed. The AC speeds are just fantastic, 1Gbps connection to my Mac mini, maxing out the internet provider speed 120Mbps. Also the dead spots are gone. Nothing to fault this airport yet. 21 November 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, ME918B/A What a piece of kit, open the box, plug it in, follow the instructions and your done. Well worth the money. 16 September 2014
