Apple USB Superdrive, CD & DVD Reader/Writer
I purchased the Apple USB Superdrive to use with my Apple Desktop because I was advised by John Lewis that my Sony external hard drive would not be compatible with Apple products.
The first software that I tried to install did install onto the Mac but the disc refused to eject.
John Lewis Technical spent some time with me on the telephone trying to find out what could be wrong with the USB drive. Finally, a member of staff looked up the problem on the internet and found out that a possible solution was to turn the drive upside down and then attempt to eject the disk. Apparently this is a recognised solution if this problem occurs.
I have to say that whilst it worked I am disappointed that the Apple USB is of such poor quality that in order to retrieve a CD or DVD a customer may have to turn it upside down. I have never had this problem with any Sony External Drive.

Superdrive and elegant design too
I bought the Super Drive for my new 2012 iMac.
I've used a few different types and brands of cd's and DVD's and all work fine even RW media.
I find the Super Drive quiet and it fits perfectly on the foot of the iMac's stand and is within very easy reach too on here. Also, the Super Drive matches the elegant design of the iMac.
Drives I've owned in the past have been the draw type. Since using the Super Drive, I find the lack of a draw to be better. The reason I say this is because, if room is tight on your desk, you need to have enough room for when the draw comes out, whereas with the Super Drive, the disk just slots neatly into the slot.
If you want a drive that will match you iMac, Macbook, then look no further than the Super Drive. If you are not bothered about it matching then save yourself some cash and go for another type.
Despite the mixed reviews I read elsewhere, I cannot fault the Super Drive, but be aware that the non detachable cable on the Super Drive is very short. If you are planning to use it on either the foot of the iMac's stand or next to your Macbook, then the short length won't be a problem. But if you are wanting it placed on the other side of your desk then you will need a USB extension cable.

Makes life easier
I did think I would not bother and hook up the macbook when I needed a CD, which theses days is only wham new s/w is delivered this way which is less and less. However I did and it lives in my drawer and easy to plug in to USB, no power needed, when I want it. Last time was to watch Grand Daughters

Works fine with 2011 and 2012 MacBook Airs, but isn't compatible with my older 17" MacBook Pro. In the small print, it mentions which models it works with, so do check before buying (I didn't, and assumed it worked with all Apple products!). Thankfully the small print on the John Lewis site is bigger and more obvious than the small print on the Apple site.
Aside from that, the other thing that really annoys me with this drive is the fixed USB cable. It's quite short so can make for awkward computer usage.
It's a nice looking piece of hardware, but if you have different Macs at home that you want to use the drive with, I'd have to honestly say that you're better off with a cheaper external drive like a Samsung Slim External...£30 less, will work with practically everything, and you can use a longer USB cable if needed, to avoid inconvenience and potential accidents.
