Astro Osaka Energy Saving Bathroom Light
Astro Osaka bathroom light
We bought this light for our bathroom which is quite dark because it's on the side of our house & doesn't get much light . It has brightened the room up no end & looks great. We are very happy with it & have purchased a second for the downstairs cloakroom. Unlike other reviews, we haven't had any problems with them. Would recommend.

poor performance - short life
I would not recommend this product. I have had two, each only lasted a couple of years. As previous reviewers have said, the light works fine for a year or so, then begins spontaneously going off after a few minutes. This problem persists with decreasing amounts of time the light will stay on until eventually the light doesn't come on at all. Most likely a badly specified ballast in the lamp unit that cannot itself be replaced. Do not buy!

As our bathroom has no window we were looking for a really bright light that was also energy saving. This light fitted the bill brilliantly. It was easy to fix and we are delighted with the result.

I have bought four of these lights over the years. All have been professionally fitted. They give a good light and look smart. However the most recent one started switching itself off after a few minutes' use - presumably a fault with the ballast as described by another reviewer. The earlier purchases continue to work well, so maybe this is a problem with recent production. In any case JL should look into it. I won't be buying another one.

The light bulb has to be removed before fitting the light. Two of us tried this for a good ten minutes without success! Each time the bulb started to move the plastic fitting round the bulb would start to come apart and we would stop in case it broke. We finally managed to get the bulb out, not by following the instructions but by shifting it from side to side. Not confident that we would be able to repeat the process in future (esp. when fitted to the ceiling) combined with the cheap looking quality of the plastic casing, meant we decided to exchange it for another product.

Bulb failed within 8 months. Replacement difficult to find as the fitting would not accept a Crompton bulb and the instructions supplied with the light states that "GE branded replacement lamps may not fit". There appears to be a major issue. Is the fitting fit for purpose?

We bought a 2nd as the first was faulty - it would turn on and off randomly for a few minutes at a time. The 2nd does exactly the same. Looks like we will have to find an alternative, which is unfortunate as we like the lamp.

Keep your receipt !
Our light failed after around a year. The manufacturer (Astro) agreed to replace the light if we presented our receipt to John Lewis. We had not kept our receipt - never expected that a light could go wrong. So we were not able to take advantage of the guarantee.
For info these lights are controlled by an electronic ballast. It was this peice of electronics that failed. Would never have happened in the days of the incandescent light bulb.
