Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 Computer Speakers

Product information

MM-1s aren’t like other computer speakers. They’re true hi-fi speakers, shrunk to fit on your desktop. So they don’t just look great - they sound amazing, transforming your computer into a superb hi-fi stereo sound system. But then you’d expect nothing less from Bowers and Wilkins, the makers of the award-winning Zeppelin iPod speaker, not to mention some of the most advanced studio speakers in the world.

Deep, Rich Computer Sound

Once they were for filling out spreadsheets and typing letters. Now computers are used for almost everything: socialising, playing games, listening to music, watching videos. Most computer speakers have to make do with just one drive unit to handle the full spectrum of frequencies. Not so with the MM-1. Just like a full-size speaker, it has two drivers, one dedicated to bass and midrange frequencies and another for the treble. So there’s a reason why MM-1 reproduces sound with the accuracy of a true hi-fi speaker: that's exactly what it is.

Tuned To Put You In Sweet Spot

All hi-fi set ups have a sweet spot - the area in the listening space where music sounds at its best. With full size hi-fi , that area is usually some distance away from the speakers. So they’ve made some electronic adjustments to the MM-1 to make sure the sweet spot is where you are: a few feet from the computer screen. You'll always be right in the middle of the action.

Studio Standard Tube-Loaded Design

Some of Bowers & Wilkins's most pioneering technology has found its way into the MM-1. The tweeters, for example, incorporate the tube-loaded design the company first developed for their famous Nautilus speakers, which dampens resonance and produces purer high frequency sounds. You’ll find the same technology in their studio-standard speakers, used by the likes of Abbey Road Studios.

Digital Signal Processing

There’s an art to producing a big sound from small speakers and it’s thanks to a clever piece of electronic fine-tuning called Digital Signal Processing. By adjusting the sound balance depending on the signal, DSP keeps bass effects powerful and music sounding rich and detailed, no matter how loud you play it.

Perfect For Private Listening

MM-1 makes private listening a pleasure, thanks to its high-quality headphone output. When you plug your headphones directly into the speakers, the audio from your computer is enhanced by high quality DACs used in the MM-1, producing a sound that’s a noticeable improvement over the standard PC or Mac headphone output.

Simple USB Link

Computer speakers normally have to rely on the wildly varying quality of the computer's analogue output signal. MM-1 is different. It streams audio directly from your computer via USB and converts the signal from digital to analogue internally. So you'll always get the best possible audio quality, independent of the computer output.

Please note: Even though the MM-1 is designed for computers, an aux line-in socket means you can hook up your speakers with almost anything, including your iPod or CD and DVD players (cable not included).

About Bowers & Wilkins

Bowers & Wilkins, then called B&W Electronics, was founded in 1966 as a manufacturing company which supplied the local clients of Worthing with hand-assembled speaker systems. Now a very large company with distribution chains all over the world, Bowers & Wilkins have gone from strength to strength updating signature technologies and entering new markets.

In pursuit of the perfect loudspeaker, the brand have leveraged innovative use of materials such as Kevlar and Diamond, derived new solutions to complex engineering and experienced moments of absolute brilliance. Q & As

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 24 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Superb speaker I researched this product over a 6 months period, then researched how to purchase them, good decisions are based on good information...... great speakers and John Lewis are also quality... 24 May 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Superb Detail and Definition I endorse JD1951's review fully it persuaded me into buying these, and I am very glad that I have. I would just add that I was quite taken aback by the sharp imaging and detail on the first track I played. I really do think they are worth the slightly hefty price tag, they are beautifully made. The little pebble remote control sadly is a triumph of design over practicality. Two detail points: Connecting via USB (on an iMac) the sound reverts to the Mac if the B&W's are switched off. There is no need for unplugging or plugging as the Mac detects their on or off state directing audio to the B&W's providing they are switched on. By the same token volume and mute from the Mac keyboard are available, the same menu/adjustment is called up via the B&W pebble remote. Holding the power button down on the RH speaker for 4 seconds turns off the system as well as extinguishing the LED indicator. Tapping the power button mutes the system, (indicated on the host Mac). 31 March 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pricy but outstanding sound from a small footprint I bought these to replace Bose Companion 2 speakers. These were very good and seriously enhanced the sound from my iMac. The B&W, though, are in a different league. The clarity of sound is outstanding, particularly at the top end where the technology B&W use really brings music to life. The mids are equally clear and the bass, whilst not having the massive "boom" that a sub-woofer would give, still seems to have the clarity and depth needed to round off the overall sensation. To get the best out of the speakers, you must ensure you connect using the USB lead so that the system uses it's own digital converter rather than the computer's. Placed on either side of the computer screen, I get a real sense of stereo separation that I never got with the Bose. They also look "cool" Little downsides. The blue/red power light is a bit annoying and it doesn't power down automatically when not used for a time. The cute little "pebble-like" remote, although useful if you don't want to use a mouse or keyboard to control the music, is symmetrical so sometimes you pick it up and it's not the right way round. At the end of the day, though, wow, what a fantastic sound from such a small package. 09 March 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great sound and great value! These stylish speakers deliver what you would expect from B&W - great design, great sound, ease of use and all in a neat package that fits well on a desktop. The wireless remote control is also handy and easy to use. The only drawback is that the speakers themselves aren't wireless. Overall and excellent product and great value for money! 31 March 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent sound but... I found these easy to set-up. Using a USB connection the sound is far superior to anything I felt I could expect from these small speakers. Also, when using my headphones in the provided socket, the quality is of the highest order. There are three design issues, however, that I really don't like... 1) The headphone socket is on the back where I find it hard to get to and it's not immediately obvious if I have my headphones plugged in or not. 2) The on/off switch is on the left of the right hand speaker meaning that I have to move the speaker away from my computer monitor to turn it on or off. 3) The remote control. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the worst piece of design I have ever come across. The buttons and their labels are too small to see. The design is symmetrical so that it's not obvious which way round you are holding it. It is virtually impossible to use with one hand. It twirls round when you try to pick it up off you desk and you do have to pick it up to use it.. I am currently trying to source an alternative remote control. It's a pity, because the sound quality is second-to-none. 16 November 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by True sound just watched streaming video from Glyndebourne and it is if am in the auditorium, the sound is so rich and beautiful. I don't know why I waited so long to buy these speakers, perfect match for my IMac 27. Forget those artificial booming sounds by that well known american manufacturer, these are the real thing. 16 August 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great speakers so long as you don't expect earth-moving bass Incredibly clear sound with very good bass for such small speakers. Perfect for listening to classical music as you shop on the internet, or whatever you do. Having them right in front of you doesn't seem at all intrusive and they turn up really loud without any distortion. However, if you play a lot of rock/pop and want a strong bass, it's probably best to go for a system with a subwoofer. That said, these B&W ones take up less room, just don't expect the room to rattle. The remote is very easy to use, contrary to one reviewer's comments. I can control Windows Media Player or iTunes running in the background. Expensive though - I bought them on a whim. I need to control my whims better . . . 30 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by An outstanding little speaker ideal for an office. I bought these to give me quality sound in a small room and these definitely provide everything I want. Surprisingly good bass and perfectly clear mid and high frequencies. One small issue is the remote, which I think is configured to work with Apple and with the speakers connected to another device the skip tracks and pause buttons don't work. B&W make no secret of their preference for Apple but I'm surprised it isn't completely compatible with others. As the pc is in front of me control is still possible and not too much of an annoyance and the sound quality makes up for it. 15 June 2014
