Editors Notes

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the Market Place in South Shields. Today the 5th generation family-owned business remains in the region, with Barbour’s headquarters located in Simonside, South Shields.

Although it sources products from around the globe, Barbour's classic wax jacket is still manufactured by hand in the factory in Simonside with over 100,000 jackets processed via the central, subsidiary and local customer service operations each year.

Today, Barbour remains true to its core values as a family business which espouses the unique values of the British countryside and brings the qualities of wit, grit and glamour to its beautifully functional clothing.

Q & As

Barbour Challenger Waterproof Jacket, Olive 4.3 5 24 24
Disappointing Looked nice, smart but casual. However the fit was poor. large too big, medium too small. The biggest problem was the zip! Extremely difficult to line up at the bottom - gave up and returned it. 22 October 2013
Very good quality jacket The jacket is very smart, practical and hard wearing. I bought a size large for my husband and had to swap it for and extra large, so beware the sizing is not very generous. 07 January 2013
Really Good but hard to get I have had one of these for a year. I use it as a motoring coat in an open car that does not have a hood. The sleeves are just the right length, it keeps ones back warm and it is waterproof. It is wind proof and very smart. All my buttons have stayed on. I thoroughly recommend it but found availability very limited and had to search hard to find one. 24 December 2012
BUTTON PROBLEMS Excellent coat lightweight but warm and waterproof. However has an issue with buttons falling off!!! one of the buttons fell of second time of wearing it. Its on its way back to JL 21 December 2012
A great jackt This is a great jacket it's so warm yet light to wear. Can't believe a cloth coat can be so waterproof. I love the waist adjustment allowing a casual of fitted look. So glad I bought it. 03 December 2012
Beware Sizing! I ordered the Barbour Challenger size XXL as a replacement for my old Barbour Balfour Size XL. The sizes bear no relationship to the sizing guide as I found when I tried it on - it was smaller than the XL Balfour. Why can't manufacturers and retailers sort this problem of changing patterns? Had to return what looked like a lovely coat and me probably finished with Barbour. Very frustrated! 02 December 2012
Nice jacket but poor quality Liked this jacket the instant I saw it and bought it almost immediately. Took it back the following day after a button fell off. I obtained a replacement and after wearing it for 3 or 4 times a button fell off. Enough is enough and I've returned it for a refund. I can't understand why the buttons are such as issue (see other reviews) and it should be simple for Barbour to ensure they are fixed properly. 25 November 2012
Excellent quality coat and a timeless classic from Barbour. Bought the coat about three years ago from Kingston branch and still going strong. Buttons are a weak point and will need resewing soon though. 06 November 2012
