Editors Notes

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the Market Place in South Shields. Today the 5th generation family-owned business remains in the region, with Barbour’s headquarters located in Simonside, South Shields.

Although it sources products from around the globe, Barbour's classic wax jacket is still manufactured by hand in the factory in Simonside with over 100,000 jackets processed via the central, subsidiary and local customer service operations each year.

Today, Barbour remains true to its core values as a family business which espouses the unique values of the British countryside and brings the qualities of wit, grit and glamour to its beautifully functional clothing.

Q & As

Barbour Thornproof Wax Dressing 4.7 5 7 7
Top product Mike1960 knows the way forward. I have followed his advice and it works. If you are close to South Shields you can pop to the factory shop and buy a massively discounted jacket, although the old ones are the best ones. 02 September 2013
Quality Barbour product Having used the Barbour Thornproof dressing for many years the wax remains a typical Barbour quality product . 04 November 2012
A very good item It was easy to use. Only two dry days, a spare hour and you have an almost new coat. Easy to do 27 July 2012
Excellent product This product was easy to use, instructions are on the tin but are also available with a very useful 'how to' video on the internet. The barbour jacket looks like new and there is enough wax left in the tin to use in the future. 02 July 2012
It needs to be done! Waxing my Barbour is not something I look forward to - it's not a nice job, to say the least, but it's a kind of 'rite of passage' for first-time Barbour owners. It does become tedious after the first time you do it - or even during the first time you do it. Unfortunately, if you want your Barbour to last and to remain waterproof it has to be done. It would probably help if I actually followed Barbour's advice and did some monthly maintenance, but I don't so I end up waxing the whole thing in one go when it starts to leak. Following advice from a fellow owner I now put the wax on cold and melt it with a hot-air blower and rub it in. I find this slightly less messy than the 'official' method but be careful with the heat - I set the smoke alarm off once by overdoing the heat! If you can afford to send your Barbour back to the factory to get it waxed do so. Otherwise this is the ONLY stuff for you. Do it - if you look after your Barbour it will look after you. 08 June 2012

Practical present What a wonderful service to order online and then just pop into Waitrose to pick up the very next day. Why can't they do that with every other online site. the person at John Lewis who thought of it deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. John Lewis have done it again!! 29 December 2011
