Bose® QuietComfort® Noise Cancelling® QC20i Acoustic In-Ear Headphones for iPad, iPhone and iPod

Product information

The QC20i is the first in-ear noise cancelling headphones from Bose. They give you more control over how you listen than ever before, in all kinds of environments. Block the outside world with full-on noise reduction and enjoy a more relaxing commute. Or, choose Aware mode and let some sound in - all while keeping your headphones on and your music alive with lifelike Bose sound.

Key benefits:

  • With QC20i headphones you'll enjoy lifelike, digital sound quality that stands out from the noise around you along with the freedom of an in-ear headphone. StayHear+ tips physically block some noise while Acoustic Noise Cancelling technology electronically reduces most of what's left. It's just you and your music, even in noisy situations.

  • There are moments when you may not want to be so cut off from your surroundings. Crossing a city street for example or waiting for airport announcements. This is where Aware mode comes in. Instead of removing your headphones, just press a button, and you're back in touch with the sounds around you, while your music keeps playing, and you still benefit from some noise cancellation.

  • TriPort technology and Active EQ combine to give your music a depth and balance that keep your daily soundtrack fresh and alive. The subtle details shine too.

  • StayHear+ tips create a soft, secure fit with no need to force them into your ears. The cone shape spreads contact evenly across the ear for maximum comfort, and forms a gentle seal that contributes to the headphones' full-spectrum noise reduction.

  • Controls are all at your fingertips. Use the slider switch on the control module to turn noise cancelling on and off. The inline remote/microphone houses Aware mode and call answer/end buttons. The 4-button remote (QC20i model), customised for use with your iPhone or iPod, adds volume, music control and voice commands.

  • The built-in lithium-ion battery charges in just 2 hours with the included USB cable, and delivers up to 16 hours playing time per charge. A battery indicator light displays power status. And, even if the battery dies your music still plays.

  • When not in use, simply store your headphones and cables in the included carrying case.

Q & As

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for trains and planes Really great product; the noise cancelling is excellent (cancelling out of low-pitched noises like engine rumble is brilliant). Great for long flights or taking the bus. Comfortable, too. You can use them with the noise cancelling turned off as well, which is very useful. The only down side to them is that they come with the small battery pack, so for e.g. walking to the shops it's sometimes worth just taking a pair of e.g. Apple headphones to save pocket space. 27 February 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent sound - needs to be a good fit These noise cancelling headphones have been very well rated and deemed to be as effective in noise cancelling as their on/over ear relations. I was slightly sceptical that they could be as good in terms of noise isolation but decided to go with the in-ear version as it was more modern technology and I appreciate the compact nature. The headphones are extremely well built and have very good battery life - the rechargeable aspect makes them a significant improvement compared to their larger, battery powered, brethren. I think sound quality is excellent, particularly with iPad. With iPhone, when you turn the volume up to a level where you need to have it if outdoors/in public places you are on the cusp of distortion levels. With the iPad you seem to be able to use at a higher level with no distortion warnings so very good for the iPad. The other key aspect is noise cancellation and here I do find that the in-ear version is not as effective as the on/over-ear type from Bose. With the noise cancelling on (but no music playing) you can still hear the majority of ambient noise. Sharp sounds are very audible. With music playing, the majority of outside noises are drowned out but you can still hear sharp, higher pitched noises. So, I think these are a bit of a compromise - very good sound, great build and usability. Also, very comfortable. The downside, not as effective on noise-cancellation (and I have tried all three of the different earpieces - they all seem to give the same result). 04 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Another winner from Bose I tried these at an airport last year where they had a demo rigged up that replicated the noise of being on a plane. Amazing noise cancelling capability and I knew I'd be investing in a pair before getting on a plane again. Last week I finally bought a pair and they have already come in handy for blocking out the sounds of the world cup in the living room, whether it be to watch something else on the laptop, to listen to music or just enjoy some quiet! They're so comfortable - it really is worth trying all three sizes of tips - and the quality is exactly what you would expect from Bose. Be aware that you will not be able to try these out in John Lewis due to hygiene issues (something they don't care so much about in airports!) but you can try the over/on ear version which will show you how good the technology is and believe the hype...these earphones are really good. 29 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by QC201i First Class Choice ! Bought them mainly to give a quieter experience during flights, they tick every box, very comfortable, they cancelled out the background noise of the flight really well. With them being in ear I also found them great for just having the noise cancel on and going to sleep and not having the annoying big over ear move of press into my head when you turn your head. recommend them any day !!! 20 May 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent - better than expected Much better than expected. Sound quality is superb - much better than other in-ear headphones I have owned (Bowers and Wilkins for example). Noise cancelling is great. If you use them on the tube you will have to get used to a weird popping sound when the air pressure changes - this is why they have 4 not 5 stars. My first pair were faulty - strange clicking sound in the left ear. New pair seem much better. 18 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent quality These headphones do exactly what you want from them. They are comfortable to wear, easy to handle and do the job. When noise cancelling is switched on they are very effective but control is just as the fingertips so that you can switch back into a safer mode when you need to hear what is around you. 09 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great headphones I received these as a Christmas present and they are great. I put them straight to use cancelling the noise of the kids out on Christmas Day, much to my wife's frustration... The noise cancelling technology is brilliant and the sound is clear. As other reviewers have said, you can also use them when the battery is flat albeit that they don't produce as good a sound. I am quite fussy with in-ear headphones in terms of comfort and was concerned that these might feel awkward on. No problems at all there. There are three sizes supplied in the pack so you just find the best fit and they are fine. I have been using them with my iPhone and they have performed really well. Not cheap but highly recommended. 30 December 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by The best in-ear noise cancelling headphones by a fair margin I own many different noise cancelling headphones and these are simply the best that I've ever tried - both for sound quality and noise cancellation - by several orders of magnitude. I also own the Sennheiser CXC-700 (sound OK but poor NC) and the Blackbox C18 (sound rubbish, feature pretty good NC but have an extremely bulky control box and awkward lanyard design). Like all in-ear NC headphones, the Bose QC20i needs a small box in-line in the headphone cable to house the rechargeable battery and magical electronics to provide the noise cancellation. This model has the box placed near to the headphone jack, meaning it stays next to your phone/mp3 player and doesn't get in the way as much as some others. It also features a standard micro-USB port for charging, which is becoming almost ubiquitous. Hence you don't need a specialist charger for them: you can use many phone/gadget chargers, or use the included cable to charge them from your computer or iPhone charger. Unlike others, these headphones can be used (without noise cancellation) when the battery is flat - they just don't sound as good. The noise cancellation in the Bose QC20is is almost miraculous. Other NC headphones are often good at cancelling office equipment fans, air-con, engine noise and similar repetitive/mechanical background noise, but these Bose ones can even cancel out a lot of speech and other non-repetitive noise - very impressive! When I'm working in a noisy shared office environment, I sometimes just switch them on without a music source attached; it's like being in a distraction-free bubble - much easier to concentrate. But playing music is where they truly excel, of course. Summary: if you like the portability, convenience and subtlety of in-ear headphones (rather than larger/bulkier over-the-ear models) and you're prepared to pay a premium for the best available sound quality and noise cancellation, I highly recommended the Bose QC20i headphones. 11 December 2013
