Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard Lens

Product information

Fast maximum aperture and rapid focusing set the Canon EF 50mm apart from the herd. Versatile enough for just about any type of photography, it’s an essential part of any Canon DSLR user’s setup.

Key benefits:

  • Advanced Gaussian optics and two high-refraction lens elements let you capture crisp, clean images, even wide open at F/1.4. The lens is ideal for photographing landscapes and travel scenes as well as portraits.
  • An ultrasonic motor (USM) powers rapid - near silent - autofocus. Full manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.
  • The circular aperture gives out of focus regions a softer feel making foreground objects stand out against a smoother, blurred background.
  • Super Spectra coating keeps colour balance vibrant and accurate, while reducing unwanted flare and ghosting for sharper images than ever.
  • For use with EF mount Canon DSLR cameras

Q & As

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by First Prime Lens. Lovely everyday Lens, easy to carry around with excellent optics. Delighted with my first prime Lens. 21 July 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pin sharp professional images! I bought this lens on recommendation from a professional photographer, and I use it with the highly rated Canon 70D APS-C camera It produces superb photos, and is also good as a video lens, although its focusing motor is noisy, so you have to separately put a microphone on the person, and not rely on the camera's own one The 'bokeh' i.e. soft background focus, is superb, probably helped by the 8 bladed aperture Highly recommended! 15 April 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by An under-rated Canon beauty. I was put off buying the Canon 50mm f1.4 for a long time, because of various suggestions that they developed faults easily. However when I saw John Lewis offer a 2 year guarantee on their camera equipment it easily put my mind at rest. The lens itself is great and sharp. The build quality and proper manual focus are worth the extra money versus Canons famously cheap 'Nifty Fifty'. This is a great update for anyone who loves the 50mm f/1.8 but needs something more robust, sharper and that doesn't break the bank. 14 April 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent lens Really pleased with this lens which has a nice weight and feel for a reasonable price. Focusses well and produces a good quality background blur when using wide apertures. 11 November 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very good purchase I highly rate this product I am able a achieve professional looking images with it. 10 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great quality lens I have had the lens for a month now and tried it in various shooting modes. It seems to work well in all modes. It seems well built and feels like a good weight and size. Have taken some very nice shots and found excellent blurring of background and nice sharp focussing. Overall I rate it and find its a great lens for portrait and some landscape. Well worth the money and worth having in your kit bag. 13 December 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Lens Amazing lens, the f1.4 lets you shoot in very little light and still get crisp shots. A great lens for portraits and a big difference between this and the 50mm f1.8 in terms of build quality, well worth the money in my opinion. 17 July 2012
