Product information

Canon’s updated EOS 70D DSLR is a powerful choice for any level of photographer. Capture the moment with stunning stills and create memorable home movies with Full HD video capture. Even fast moving action can be captured thanks to 7fps full resolution shooting, an advanced 19-point AF system and Canon’s unique Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology.

The included 18-135mm image stabilising lens is a flexible choice that will allow you to capture snaps up close and at range.

Key benefits:

  • The high performance EOS 70D combines a 20.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and a powerful DIGIC 5+ image processor to deliver 14-bit images that are packed with detail and clarity. Colours are reproduced accurately while tonal gradation is subtle and natural.
  • Capturing superb shots of fast paced action like sports or wildlife is easy with 7fps full resolution continuous shooting and a high performance 19 cross-type point AF System, which provides high precision, responsiveness and accuracy to capture the moment with high image quality.
  • The EOS 70D is the first camera to feature Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, enabling fast and smooth autofocus tracking while shooting movies. Each pixel features two photo diodes that can be read independently during autofocus or together to capture the image.
  • The EOS 70D delivers stunning Full HD video with fast accurate autofocus thanks to Canon’s unique Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. Explore your creativity with stereo sound, full manual control and selectable frame rates.
  • Shoot remotely from alternative viewpoints: connect and control your EOS 70D using your PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Images can be reviewed and transferred wirelessly and instantly shared with family and friends.
  • When light levels fall, the EOS 70D keeps performing. It offers an ISO range of up to 12800 – expandable to 25600 – so you can capture superb handheld shots in low light without using flash.
  • Use the intuitive touch controls to shoot from unique or awkward angles with a 3-inch ClearView II LCD touch screen, which features 1,040,000 dots for high resolution playback. Switch to Live View mode to capture the best angle and to help compose your shot.
  • Enjoy a larger, more magnified field of view using the intelligent viewfinder which offers 98% coverage, relaxed viewing with a 22mm eyepoint and displays useful shooting information and an electronic level to help you capture the best shot.
  • Preserve detail in both highlights and shadows with the EOS 70D’s high dynamic range (HDR) feature, and create composite images with its multiple-exposure facility. Enhance your stills with a range of Creative filters such as Toy camera effect or Miniature.
  • The EOS 70D is compatible with Canon’s full range of EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites so you can progress your photographic skills with additional lenses and flashes.
  • Includes 18-135mm lens, eyecup, camera cover, wide strap, battery, charger and interface cable.

Q & As

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Terrific Camera Bought as an upgrade from my old Canon 300D that was their first DSLR and is still going strong! That said they are worlds apart in just about every respect. The camera is ready in an instant meaning it can be left on standby, preserving the battery. Autofocus is likewise faster, more accurate and with several modes. Exposure accuracy is always consistently good. One aspect that I initially thought was a gimmick namely the WiFi is really useful. With the EOS app on your phone or iPad, images can be viewed on a larger screen almost instantly and likewise downloaded directly. The app also permits the phone to be used as a remote allowing you to view the image before shooting. Although not a camera feature, Image Stabilised lenses are well worth the extra particularly for telephotos With regard to John Lewis' service, again excellent. Having done my research (so I thought!) initially considered the 7D until I picked it up. Considerably heavier and for a professional use felt tough enough. Since I don't fall into that category went for the 70D against advice of the assistant who ascertained what I would be using the camera for and advised the 700D. The main difference being the frames per second speed, oh and a couple of hundred quid! My rationale being didn't want to regret buying the wrong one. Nonetheless, a joy to receive advice for my benefit and not for upselling. In conclusion, had the camera for over a year now and well satisfied with it. Just hope it lasts as long as my 300D. 21 May 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great camera, odd offer I bought the Canon 70d with 18 to 135mm lens at the weekend, this came with the camera bag and memory card offer as currently advertised. So far the camera seems great and as ever the JL staff were helpful. However I would point out that with the larger lens and the strap fitted the camera struggles to fit into the bag provided, certainly it does not feel that the camera is going to be adequately protected, as such with the offer you only really get the memory card unless you go with the smaller lens. 11 May 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Camera but disappointing Canon Promotion This is a really fabulous Camera and I am really enjoying all the updated features of it which are numerous. For example I took some wonderful photos of the eclipse using the screen to look into to set them up, rather than going blind!! If you have used a DSLR before and want to move up to an improved version then I can certainly recommend this camera. Adjusting the settings is much easier than my old Canon once you get used to them. However, I am really fed up regarding these Canon promotions. I was initially put off claiming because they ask a lot of personal information including name, address & bank account number etc. I now find out that I have missed the deadline which was 21st Jan 15 when the Camera was a Christmas present!! Pretty disgraceful really and doesn't reflect well on John Lewis either. Most people I am sure never get around to claiming which is what they rely on. 21 March 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great DSLR choice at reasonable price This is a great DSLR, especially the video function which produces excellent quality. I shoot short HD videos for work and the quality is fantastic with a selection of manual and auto-focusing possibilities. Stills are also crisp and sharp even with the 18-135 kit lens but especially with my 50mm f1.4. Was really wanting a full frame Canon 5D Mk III but rumours are there is a Mk IV on the way later this year/early next so I plumped for the 70D as a (crop sensor) stopgap and am extremely pleased with the overall quality and upgraded video technology. Works brilliantly with the Canon Remote app which allows control of settings and shutter release from your iPhone via the wi-fi function. 13 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Worthwhile upgrade This camera is an upgrade from the canon 400, to document a grandson's first movements. I have found it to be a significant improvement in ease of use terms and picture quality, unexpected as the 400 was very good. 22 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Camera This is my first DSLR and I have to say that the pictures I took were of a very high quality. The auto focus and function is a really nice feature. So is the image stabiliser lense. Took pictures of a family function at home and all pictures turned out to be great. The wide LCD touch screen is quite nice as well. Used it for a day but am very impressed so far. 11 April 2014
