We offer a range of services linked to delivery of new products such as electrical appliances and beds, including installation and disposal, when your order is being delivered by our green van crew rather than direct from a supplier. You can buy a service at the same time as you order your new product, and our crew will carry out that service when they deliver.
Wet connect installations
These services are available when your appliance is being delivered by our own green van crew rather than direct from a supplier. You'll be offered the option in checkout when the product is being delivered by us.
For just £25, we'll connect your washing machine, washer dryer, or dishwasher to the water and waste pipes. We'll switch it on and do a test wash to make sure it's all working properly, and we'll remove and dispose of all packaging responsibly.
Your water and electricity connections must be within one metre of the installation point for us to carry out this service, and it must be possible to turn off your mains water. There also needs to be adequate water pressure, and the installation shouldn't be in a bathroom, toilet or unheated outbuilding. If your appliance is going under a counter, please check that there's at least a gap of 87cm between the floor and the underside of the worktop.
For £8 we'll connect a tumble dryer, as long as the electric point is within one metre of the appliance. We can also connect an integrated washing machine, dishwasher or fridge/freezer for £85.
For a further £9, we can remove and dispose of your old appliance (including fridges and freezers) for recycling. Appliances must be disconnected and drained where necessary before our delivery crew arrives.
Cooking appliance installations
These services are available when your appliance is being delivered by our own green van crew rather than direct from a supplier.
We can connect a freestanding electric (£65), gas (£75) or dual fuel (£95) cooker. This service includes disconnection of your old appliance (regardless of fuel type), and the connection of your new appliance to an existing electric and/or gas supply within 1.5 metres of the installation location. We'll also give you a basic demonstration of your new appliance. Please note though, that we're unable to cut back work tops and remove carcasses to allow the change from an old integrated appliance to your new freestanding model.
We can also connect an electric (£85), induction (£85) or gas (£95) hob. Again this service includes disconnection of your old appliance (regardless of fuel type), and the connection of your new appliance to an existing electric and/or gas supply within 1.5 metres of the installation location. We'll also give you a basic demonstration of your new appliance.
For electric and induction hobs and electric cookers, there must be an adequate electrical supply based on manufacturer's recommendations, and the supply must be within 1.5 metre of the installation location with an accessible isolation switch. There must also be an adequate gap (as per the manufacturer's recommendations) between the heat source and whatever is above it in your kitchen. There can be no combustible materials (including wallpaper) to the rear of the heat source. If your worktop does need to be altered for a hob, we're only able to do this if it's wood-based as we cannot alter corinth, granite or ceramic worktops.
For gas hobs and gas or dual fuel cookers, if the product is destined for a flat, multi-user dwelling or shared occupancy building (including where a single room is let out), the item must have a Flame Suppressant Device (FSD). The existing gas supply must be within 1.5m of the installation location and a 13amp electric supply within a metre. There must be an adequate gap (as per the manufacturer’s recommendations) between the heat source and whatever is above it in your kitchen, and there can be no combustible materials (including wallpaper) to the rear of the heat source. If you have a conservatory to the rear of the kitchen, this must have an air brick in the wall or additional ventilation. Our installers will have to interrupt your gas supply to allow a safe installation, so we’ll endeavour to restart any gas appliances in your home. However, please note that we're not responsible for any appliance that fails to restart, including central heating and gas boilers. If your worktop does need to be altered for a hob, we're only able to do this if it's wood-based as we cannot alter corinth, granite or ceramic worktops.
We can also connect an integrated/built-under electric (£85) or gas (£95) oven. All the above conditions apply, but in addition the housing must be ready-assembled and be the correct dimensions for the new product, as we do not undertake carpentry to amend existing carcasses.
Cooker hoods, whether extractor or circulatory type, can be installed for £85. In both cases, the 13amp electricity supply must be within a metre of the installation location, and we'll give you a brief demonstration of the product. We'll disconnect your old hood as part of this service if it involves changing like for like.
For an extractor, we'll connect the hood to an existing extractor fan and the correct ducting; as this is not supplied, you must already have the correct type and size of ducting kit. The aperture must be the correct dimensions for the hood, and for both types of hood the wall or ceiling must be of suitable construction to bear the weight. We won't expand or reduce vent holes, or install a hood where this might contravene the requirements of nearby appliances.
For all appliances, we'll remove packaging if required, and for a further £9 we'll remove and dispose of your old appliance for recycling.
When you buy lighting from our shops, our trained crew will install wall, ceiling or outdoor lights to an existing safe wiring point, (excluding recessed lights or anything over 10’ high) on domestic premises. The price of this service is £69 for the first light, and £49 for each additional light. All our installers are NICEIC-trained (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) and are fully able to carry out the work required.
We’ll check the polarity and earthing of the required circuit, and for safety we’ll need to switch off mains power at the consumer board; this may mean you needing to reset timers and so on once we’ve finished the work. (Sorry, but we’re not liable for products on other circuits that fail to work once power is reconnected.) We’ll remove all the packaging from your new light.
When buying a light for outdoors or for the bathroom you need to check the IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The higher the rating, the more protected it is. For outdoor or bathroom lighting you need a minimum IP44 rating. Find out more about IP ratings.
We need you to make sure that a light for a bath/shower room or for outdoors has the correct IP rating; if it’s to be fixed to a flammable surface, it must have the correct fire rating. Please make sure that you have the correct bulbs before the crew arrives, as they don’t keep a stock of them.
We’re unable to install on circuits with rubber or lead-sheathed wiring, or on any surface which represents a health and safety risk for the installers.

If you buy a refrigerated appliance and you need us to reverse the door/s for the best fit in your kitchen, we can do that for you for £30 before delivery. However if your new appliance has wiring for electronic door-mounted controls running through the hinges, it isn't possible for us to reverse the doors for you.
For £29, we'll assemble your new bedstead in the room of your choice, and remove and dispose of all the packaging responsibly.
Please be aware that we cannot move or dismantle existing furniture or other items, and we need the location for the bedstead to be clear for our crew to access and work in.
Recycling of batteries, electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
Since 1 July 2007, the UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations allow members of the public to deposit old electrical and electronic items at recycling sites across the UK, free of charge.
Electrical and Electronic Equipment is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, increasing by at least 5% each year. The public dispose of over 1.2 million tonnes of waste every year in the UK, and landfill sites are now reaching full capacity. Much of this waste can be recycled, and the resources recovered to make new consumer goods. The WEEE regulations aim to reduce the quantity of electrical and electronic items disposed of in this way, and will encourage everyone to play a part in protecting our environment for future generations.
As retailers of electrical and electronic products, both John Lewis and Waitrose fully support this regulation, and we have joined together with some of the UK’s leading electrical retailers to create and fund a new body - the Distributor Take-Back (DTS) scheme - which is helping to develop a new UK recycling network for waste electrical products. Over the next three years, the scheme will make available more than £10 million to establish and upgrade recycling facilities across the UK, so that customers can conveniently recycle old electrical appliances.
To find your nearest recycling sites for waste electrical and electronic products, contact your local council, or visit www.recycle-more.co.uk and type your postcode into the recycling bank locator.
Since 5 May 2009, the UK's Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations require those who manufacture, import or produce one tonne of batteries or those who place products containing batteries onto the UK market to be responsible for the collection, treatment and recycling of the waste batteries. In the UK, we use 600 million batteries every year - an average of 21 per household. In 2007 just 3% of batteries were being recycled, the rest were going to landfill. The UK is aiming to meet targets of 25% recycling of batteries by 2012 and 45% by 2016.
Everything from AAA cells to mobile phone batteries and button cells used in hearing aids and watches, must be separated from household rubbish and placed into designated recycling bins in shops or other recycling points. Recycling facilities are available in all John Lewis and Waitrose stores.
Our buyers are also aware of how this legislation impacts the products they select, and all our own-brand products which fall under the WEEE and batteries regulations are clearly identifiable with a crossed out wheelie-bin symbol. As a producer of electrical, electronic and battery-containing products, we are also members of producer compliance schemes which will take responsibility for recycling batteries and waste electrical and electronic products.
