Our heritage

Since 1864, and through the efforts of our 30,000 Partners (staff), we have succeeded in becoming the UK's largest multi-channel retailer, with 39 John Lewis shops and johnlewis.com, our growing online business.

We’re a different sort of company, as each member of staff is a Partner in the business. We’re the largest example of worker co-ownership in the UK, and each year we share our profits with each of our Partners in the form of an annual bonus.

John Lewis is part of the John Lewis Partnership which includes the Waitrose supermarkets and a textiles factory in the north of England. Together we have over 85,000 Partners.

The John Lewis Partnership

Our Founder, John Spedan Lewis, inherited the business from his father John, but set out to create a different kind of commercial organisation, continuing the experiment he'd started at Peter Jones in Sloane Square. His vision was a business that would compete in a commercial market, but based on democratic principles legally protected by a constitution.
