Editors Notes
One of the most popular British science fiction TV programmes of all time, Doctor Who has become an iconic flagship show for BBC One, with a total of 33 series having been made since 1963, spawning 789 episodes, at the time of writing. The show originally ran between 1963 and 1989, followed by an unsuccessful attempt to revive it in 1996, before becoming a hit again in 2005 when Russell T Davies took it on. Since then it has remained a ratings hit and gathered a loyal fanbase all over again.
It’s interesting to note that the series wasn't intended to purely be a drama at first, with the intention being to make an educational programme that used time travel as a way to explore famous scientific moments of the past and the ideas and theories around them. Thankfully it was steered away from this direction so that it would become the family entertainment we all know and love today, full of instantly recogniseable sci-fi motifs, such as the Tardis and Sonic Screwdriver.
Eleven actors have played The Doctor over the years, with the most recent being Matt Smith. These Time Lords have faced their fair-share of villains over the years, the most recognisable of which are the Daleks, Cybermen and The Master. The Daleks very nearly didn't make it onto our screens though, with the original script they featured in being rejected by both the BBC’s Head of Drama and Head of Serials. The only reason that they ended up green-lighting the script was simply because they wanted a serial to follow up the successful debut and there was nothing else that was ready to go into production.
