Q & As

Dualit DCM2X Coffee System and Jug 3.3 5 12 12
Retro barrista coffee maker As a keen coffee maker normally with a cafetiere at work and at home and as we had some money kindly leftover from our generous guests we very much wanted a Barista like coffee making machine. This machine really looks the part, it looks great on our kitchen and is relatively compact for what it delivers. Fantastic coffee shop coffee that my mum would probably call Spanish coffee (when she tries it). I must admit for once I didn't really look into reviews and trusted the best housekeeping sticker on the box and I'm pleased to say I'm very happy with this machine so I was surprised to see some mixed reviews. Comments on these, the drainer I have found sometimes leaks but this seems to be more when it needs emptying. The milk frother is off to the side, it can cause a mess, but it's a compact coffee maker and they make a mess regardless. The coffee filter does get clogged after a few goes if youre using straight coffee without a filter, I've just cut up some cheap coffee filters and they work fine. Not many places seem to stock the dualit filters and they're comparatively expensive. The coffee holder does seem to retain water most times it has finished making the coffee. Must admit this doesn't bother me much, I tip some out in the tray and empty it after each use anyway. As this is a barrista type coffee maker it gives you the flexibility of making whatever coffee you want. An inherent downside is slightly more things to clean. It's still easier than cleaning my cafetiere. All in all a quality product after 2 months use working from home and 2 coffees a day. Sure it will last the test of time and if not I've got a 2 year warranty. 08 July 2014
too noisy This machine was my birthday present, I wanted a different one but the 3 in 1 option was a bonus. Unfortunately the machine makes a horrible noise, it is the last thing you want to hear in the morning or during a dinner party, you also need to stop the water flow and the quality of the coffee isn't that good a part from the pots. I should have taken it back but being a bday present it didn't feel right. 02 July 2014
Easy to use Makes great coffee and easy to use every day. Great that you can use different pods ect. 15 May 2014
Value for money Good value for money. Makes a nice cup of coffee if a little noisy. 22 April 2014
Great addition to the kitchen Liked the look of this coffee machine when I saw it on line. Very pleased when it arrived. Great vintage look and makes good coffee. We have also purchased the toaster to match. 21 January 2014
It is good, but you need to take a little care. I have to start by saying I have had a few similar coffee machines in the past so have some "experience" of using these machines. The Dualit is compact, stylish and slightly retro looking. It makes very good espressos. The quality, understandably, greatly depends upon the coffee and how finely it's ground. Experiment, that's part of the fun. Find out which coffee works for you. Once you have mastered the espresso, the latte and the cappuccino should be a breeze. The milk frother works well. It needs to hang off the side for easy access, so drips are unavoidable. To prevent clogging use the filter papers supplied. 1.5 liter water tank is quite acceptable. 15 Bar pump gives you a good 'crema'. If you don't like the hassle of ground coffee then use the ESE pods which give good results, or NX capsules which have a huge variety of strengths and flavors. To me this machine gives you the best of all worlds. Espresso machines are a little messy and need cleaning up after using ground coffee, frothing milk, etc. That is just a fact of life and part of the experience. On the whole I have been very happy with it. My only minor complaint is that the cup warmer does not run very hot and so I do warm my cups before starting. 10 January 2014
Useless. For a leading brand this really should be much better. The coffee-making process is far too fiddley and the water reservoir is too small - by the time the filter has been pre-heated, there's only enough water for a couple of cups of actual coffee. The coffee itself is only ever luke warm - I'd be embarrassed serving it to guests. The filter itself never completely drains through during the coffee-making process, resulting in a brim-full filter having to be carefully removed from the machine between each cup. The main body of the machine is too small to accommodate a standard mug. The milk-frother does a good job but pokes out the side of the machine and thus drips milk on the work top after it's been used. Looks very stylish (especially in the bare-silver finish) but as a coffee maker it's hopeless. 23 August 2013
Just doesn't work (twice!) We returned the first one but tried again as this machine is the closest to our needs. However we've now given up. Main problem is coffee leaking out between the filter and seal so you end up with coffee dripping on the worktop. We've taken a lot of trouble to check what's happening, luckily we found a bag of old ground coffee in the back of a cupboard so we could do a lot of tests on both machines. The seals were in good condition, we made sure the lip of the filter holder and shower head were free of coffee grounds, we underfilled the filter to avoid any problems with excess coffee, we made sure the filter holder was clamped fully up to the stop on its bayonet fitting but still it leaked. I think we did make one cup with the single filter that didn't leak, otherwise every one was a mess. Other problems were that the hot water supply from the wand was very powerful and spattery so using it to fill a cup sprayed a lot of water around the place, and the supplied coffee measure is way too big for the double filter supplied, two level scoops was a lot more than filling the filter to the top and you need to fill it below the top. So it sounds like a combination of poor design and poor manufacture. The coffee was good with a good crema, it steamed milk OK but maybe not as controllable as the plain steel wand on our old Magimix machine, the machine looks great, it's compact in our small kitchen and it takes my little Solva Pottery mugs which are taller than normal cups. So a great disappointment and waste of time, Don't buy Dualit. 15 August 2013
