Eclectica Vintage 1980s Monet Gold Plated Aztec Collar Statement Necklace
A substantial collar necklace from the 1980s, produced by Monet and sourced by Eclectica.
Taking inspiration from the strong and simple geometric forms of Aztec iconography, each link is gold plated and intricately worked. Ideal for giving a luxe look, without the price tag a solid gold piece of this size would incur.
The necklace is 41cm long, 2cm wide.
One of the most renowned and collectible names in vintage jewellery, the Monocraft company was founded around 1927 by two Brooklyn based brothers. The company initially specialised in monogramming, producing personalised decals and moving into monograms for handbags sold in department stores following the Great Depression.
Monet jewellery was launched in 1937, with Monocraft as the parent company. The intent was to make finely produced pieces that were still affordable, and they became so successful that by the 1960s and 1970s they could choose the most upscale and exclusive department stores to carry their pieces. After the death of one of the founding brothers in 1968, the company signed with General Mills and expanded their fashion jewellery range. By the 1980s they were an international name, acquiring the license for Yves St Laurent jewellery.
In 1985 Monet was acquired by the Crystal Brands Apparel Group, alongside other renowned vintage brands Trifari and Marvella. They would go on to be one of the largest costume jewellery groups in the world, but filed for bankruptcy in 1994. The brand has changed hands three times since then, but their most widely collected pieces are from the heydays of the 1960s to 1980s.
Please note, this is a limited production piece of vintage jewellery.
