This is a terrific quality A/C unit which I bought to keep bedroom cool in summer but to be honest it was a bit of a mistake. It's not the fault of the quality of the unit which looks like it will last.
I fitted the hot air exhaust properly to the window with an air tight seal I made myself. That means it creates a negative pressure in the bedroom and so hot air rushes back in to replace the hot air the A/C has blown out the window. This negates the cooling effect a lot in hot weather. To be really effective you need one of the units that draws in air from the outside and blows cold into the room, this creates a positive pressure and hot air does not come back in.
Also the noise means you absolutely can not use this overnight and I am half deaf!

Unit is used in an office roughly 30sq mts. MUCH quieter than existing, older unit. Cools room successfully on a fairly hot day - it's predecessor did not.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Sid55 Keeps one room cool, but very noisy
Not sure about this to be honest. It's a very large, very heavy piece of kit that makes a lot of noise. I gave it 3 stars but maybe I'm being harsh. It's a solid bit of kit which works and looks like it would last.
I bought it thinking that it might keep the first floor of our house cool (which I know was a bit of a stretch) but it really only works in one room, even with the door wide open to the landing and other rooms. So my wife and I have a nice cool bedroom, but the kids continue to suffer in the hot weather. Oops.
Except for one problem that is - the noise. I would probably try and sleep through it, but my wife says she can't stand it. So when we go to bed in the evening, we have to turn it off. And then, since the house has been heated up all day by the sun, the temperature in our bedroom starts to rise as the heat radiates away, and within an hour the room is warm again. Doh!
The product is designed to be used with ventilation through a hole in the wall (didn't fancy that) or with sash windows. I have a casement window (opens outwards) and the way I installed it was as follows:-
1) Cut the supplied fixing kit to the correct width, so that it sits in the bottom of the open window. Imagine the fixing kit is covering the lower 20% of the open window.
2) Cut a piece of perspex to fit the remaining 80%. This simply sits on top of the fixing kit in the lower 20% of the window. I cut it with a small indent on the right hand side which sort of hooks on a bit of the window frame. This therefore keeps my perspex window in place.
3) It has to be right next to the wall, underneath this window, since the exhaust tube is fairly short. It's also fairly wide (I imagined the diameter of an apple, but think more grapefruit!)
I admit it's a bit Heath Robinson, but it seems to work. I work from home so am happy to have this upstairs window open like this.
So, on the hottest of days, my family can be found watching the TV in our bedroom in comfort. Shame it's so noisy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by philgeezer1 Not enough power for a conservatory!
If you are buying this thinking it will work in a conservatory, think again!
Nowhere near enough power to be able to cope with this type of room or our lounge. It is "very DIY" and not suitable for anything other than light, small roomed use.
Returned for a full refund and cannot fault the JS service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by PaulW2020 Powerful air conditioning
Its always the way. 2 weeks of scorching hot temperatures.
So I order an air conditioner.
By the time it arrived its turned cold!
So far I've therefore only had limited use - more to test it than anything.
But it seems quite powerful in cooling.
And the good thing is being a heater and dehumidifier as well it'll get use in the winter.
It is fairly noisy - only someone seriously hard of hearing could call it quiet!
The noise doesn't really trouble me but it may some people.
I like the fact it has a dust cover - a small thing but you really don't want a layer of dust on something that blows air out.
The manual is pretty poor - thankfully most things are fairly obvious with some trial and error.
Except one thing - the remote control.
I thought I had a faulty one as none of the buttons had any effect on the air conditioner - except the LED screen off/on button!
The manual was no help.
I discovered through trial and error that for the two to communicate you must firstly have the air conditioner off.
Then turn it on via the remote - not directly via the machine itself.
Doing this ensures the remote control operates the machine.
At some point I'm hoping for hot weather and I can actually properly use the machine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JonnyLeeds This has saved my marriage!
This air conditioner has had a significant impact on reducing the temperature of my bedroom so much that my wife and myself can now sleep in the same bed without getting all hot and sticky during the warm summer months! In fact it is so good, the noise it makes drowns out the noise of her snoring.
In all seriousness, this is a very good machine, however the word ‘portable’ should be used loosely! This machine is extremely heavy and cumbersome. The lead used to plug it in to the wall socket isn’t very long, nor is the ventilation hose. This didn’t cause us too many problems, other than slightly restrict where we located it.
The air conditioner came supplied with a window fitting kit (which doesn’t fit a hinged window as per other reviews) and a cover to store it in which I thought was a nice touch.
This is an expensive machine, however for a good nights sleep during the hot summer months it is worth every penny!
The John Lewis service was excellent as always.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Coolbloke High quality product!
Really pleased with this air conditioner, made to a high spec and easy to control. Reaches cooling temp fast in my 8x6M room. Noise level is expected for this type of machine, but not too bad. Only gripe is that, as others have stated before, the 150mm x 1.5metre ducting hose is too short. It really needs to be 2.5 to 3 metres. I am having difficulty in finding a longer hose other than the soft plastic type which will sag too much.
