House by John Lewis Lean Bookcase
few of the wood pieces were scraped and damaged
the holes were not aligned properly or damaged so could not get screws or covers on some of them. just looked a bit cheap (which it is) and flimsy.

Good looking, great value
Well done JL. Modern, sleek and practical. I only knocked off a star because the instructions were not that clear but a young friend put it together for me quickly after a couple of queries.
Looks attractive but relatively unobtrusive due to the receding line as the shelves get progressively less deep.
I have not even had to screw it to the wall, having put the heavy stuff on the bottom couple of shelves.
I like it so much I am going to get another one or two, another for my living room and one for my bedroom so I can stack jewellery boxes, hair stuff etc more elegantly than now.

Pretty good for the price
The design of this lean bookcase was perfect as I saw many options that were more chunky or had lips to the shelves which I didn't want. The price was also very good in comparison. Built it with no problems but agree with other reviews that the finish could be better as there are a few small chips on the paint but as it was only for the spare room to hold some old books I'm quite satisfied.

Good, but finishing is flawed
As mentioned previously, there are some minor scruffs or scrapes on the wood. Not really what i expected from 'john lewis'. Having said that, theyre not THAT noticable on general use. The fitting of shelves could be clearer to avoid time wasting. I expect this is why some people thought their shelves were mis-drilled. The wooden plugs, which fill in the screw holes on the side of the unit aren't of great quality. They're not totally painted or laquered, and theyre tough to get into place, being the exact same size of the whole, before any paint or laquer was applied.
lastly, it is recommended using the supplied holes to position the shelves against the way to keep it secure. These really should have been included. I haven't bothered. Its full of books and the weight keeps it straight. The persons whose unit leaned a lot might not have tightened the screws enough? anyway, im babbling.

Great product, easy to assemble, reasonable price
I've wanted a ladder style bookcase for years, but have been able to find the right one at the right price. I love this one & it only took 20 minutes to assemble.
I wish it was available in more colours as I would have preferred a dark wood colour.

it's attractive on account of its clean lines and simplicity. But I have a couple of gripes. First, the instructions and labeling of parts did not make clear which way round to instal the shelves. To get all 5 shelves flush against the all meant removing shelves and turning them around. Annoying, because the two-part grip fixings are fiddly, so what should have been a 10 minute job became at least twice as long.
Secondly - the unit HAS to be secured to wall. It can lean sideways at an alarming angle if not secured, and could be dangerous if there are children around. It comes with metal inserts at the top of each upright, designed to accommodate the head of a screw placed into the wall. But drilling a hole to take a screw that lines up perfectly with the slot in the insert is Krypton Factor territory. I did finally hit on a solution, using cut down dowels and lipstick to mark exactly where to drill - but felt that the kit should have supplied something to help one drill in the right place.
Yes. the finish is not perfect in places, but the overall appearance is good.

Good for the price
A bit boring to assemble - and it should be 'fixed' to the wall, but it does look good once done - and is really good value.
