Q & As

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Third Time Lucky ? My first HP Envy had problems with the speaker system after 3 weeks. The replacement had scratches on the screen and a mark/gauge near the finger mouse plate. Hoping the 3rdone is going to be ok. 27 January 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Doesn't quite live up to its promise I bought this machine to replace an HP Pavilion running Vista. The Windows Transfer Wizard only works going from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 - if you are transferring settings, files and documents from XP or Vista you are pretty much on your own. Nice one Microsoft. Overall this isn't a bad laptop but does have some faults. It has a decent spec. and the hydrid HDD means it opens and closes impressively quickly. For routine "office" type tasks the battery life is excellent. Although it appears of sturdy construction on mine the front left corner is raised slightly off the desk so there is a very slight wobble. The "island" keyboard is disappointing compared to previous HP laptops and repeatedly I find I have to go back and insert repeated letters (e.g. let(t)ers); I thought this would improve with familiarity but apparently not. Also oddly there is no number lock indicator - so it's down to trial and error. The illuminated keys are useful. As supplied the desktop icons are both small and fuzzy. Increasing the size of the icons is possible but they still look fuzzy. There isn't an integral DVD writer but with four USB3 ports an external writer works fine. The SD card reader hasn't worked since new despite device manager reporting all is well and reinstalling the drivers and updating the Bios. Perhaps quality control at HP isn't all it could be? John Lewis staff have been excellent in their efforts to try and sort this out without the inconvenience of having to send it away for repair but without success. Despite the niggling problems I'm mostly happy with my purchase. The Windows 8.1 operating system is confused and if John Lewis had offered the choice I would have preferred it with Windows 7. My overall impression is that, like most of the current crop of laptops, it seems like it's intended more for Facebook and Twitter than as a desktop replacement for serious work and that's a shame because with its specification it more than capable of the latter. 07 January 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Stylish laptop This laptop not only looks good, but it is also super-fast, quiet and a real pleasure to use. I cannot fault it, and it is excellent value for money. 18 November 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great casual laptop HOWEVER in early developement I bought this laptop for uni however I had to return the first envy j140sa I bought due to the keypad breaking within the first day and battery life being horrendous. However I decided to buy it again and so far.....I’m glad I did. Pros -It very slim and stylish to look at and for the potential performance it gives, it is extremely compact, which is very convenient -Battery life is decent for a casual gaming laptop, same as Mikeyv30, however only when screen brightness is very low -Fingerprint reader is exceptionally good which is completely contradictory to some reviews ive read for this laptop. My fingers worked fine every time ive used it -The Full HD screen is a must and when comparing this to the touchscreen version, the 720p screen on the touchscreen version is VERY low quality compared to this and has no where near as good viewing angles as this. -Very sturdy and solid Cons -This is the j140na not j140sa -No optical Disk Drive. -Screen is glossy; most noticed when the backlit keyboard is on and all you can see on the screen is the keys! -Sometimes the touchpad from HP doesn't work and you have to quit the application and reopen it to use the mouse again, which can be a pain. -There is an incredible amount of flex on the WASD keys for some odd reason as the other keys have no flex whatsoever -The Beats audio system is not actually 'Beats audio' as in the success of their headphones. Its just a branding HP put on their laptops as they sponsor each other -Some apps dont work with Full HD screen i.e. Chrome Overall I WOULD recommend this laptop but only for the promotional price I paid! The price now is a little on the high side considering you can buy the 'big brother' of this laptop for an extra few hundred pounds. Also the specs are a little misconceiving as the GeForce 840m only works with some applications. This was slightly disappointing to uncover as, as of yet, I haven't been able to see the laptops full potential and I’ve had it nearly a month! 16 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Laptop I'm a student and I bought this laptop for uni. Pros -Excellent beats sound system -Graphics card is great for a casual gamer (geforce 840m) -Intel core i5-4200m is very fast. Can handle multiple tasks simultaneously.(The laptop is also very fast at shutting down and powering on- 5 to 7 seconds) -8GB RAM and 1TB is not something to be taken lightly of -Battery is decent for a 15.6 inch laptop- at minimum brightness and using the internet it lasts for about 5 to 6 hours. When playing games around 2 hours. -Screen has excellent HD quality and there are no dark spots or problems with viewing angles. -Backlit keyboard feature and numeric pad. -Very good wireless connection card (I'm about 10m and a few walls in between away from my house router) -Laptop doesn't get hot at all- even after 15 hours of gaming it was only a bit warm underneath- and laptop fan is quiet. -Design is simple yet very elegant and the chassis is very sturdy also the screen's hinges don't feel flimsy at all. -Is quite light and portable at 2.2kg for a 15.6 inch laptop Cons -Mouse pad- left and right mouse buttons are hard to press -Up and Down arrow buttons are smaller than the rest and could cause a few problems for anyone playing games but you do get used to them. -Useless apps installed which no one uses (but hey every laptop has such things) -McAffee security provided is shocking, so I uninstalled it and used Windows defender which is more thorough and better. -A bit of a shame that it doesn't have an optical disc drive -AC Adaptor can get VERY hot when laptop is open and charging. -A little expensive for my taste but you do get your money's worth. Overall, I believe it is a great all-rounded laptop. It's great for everyday and entertainment purposes. I have had it for about a month now and you could say that it is still early days but the fact that I've thrown water at it,sat on it and been using it 18 hours a day, everyday since I bought it and it stills performs I think is a good sign. 10 September 2014
