Humax DTR-T1010 YouView Smart 500GB Freeview+ HD Digital TV Recorder 4.6 5 9 9
Lots of features but with lots of faults This PVR bought as a replacement for an earlier model Humax. The PVR was plugged into a non-widescreen TV and there is no menu option for this. The result is that everything on the screen is squashed from 16:9 ratio to 4:3 ratio. You might argue that John Lewis shouldn't need to mention this but the TV fits into an enclosed area, still works, and a widescreen TV wouldn't fit neatly into the space. The font size is small (exacerbated by above "squash" problem) with no option to increase it. The zoom button gives an ~30% increase in size but the remote control direction buttons change function to scrolling around the zoom area. You need to press zoom again to zoom out before you use the buttons for navigating around the menus. The internet connection is wired connection rather than wifi. Fine if you happen to have your internet connection next to the TV, as the supplied cable is quite short. Unfortunately doesn't support wi-fi (as hinted on the John Lewis website under "Internet ready"...it says "Internet enabled devices allow you to a wealth of online content through Wi-Fi, dongle or Ethernet connection"). Output quality (especially the colours) through the scart connector is poor when compared to the previous Humax model. The HDMI connector is fine, and required for 1080i. Menus, whilst generally intuituve, have not been thought out. You end up pressing a lot of buttons to navigate around menus. Some inconsistency between when you should use the navigation arrows, the "OK" button and the ">" play button. Very slow to startup when used in default eco mode. Manual says it goes into a "deep sleep" when not used for a time. It takes multiple minutes to come back to life and seems to have problems recording timed programs when in that mode. A disappointing product; had I bought this to go with the latest TV and had an internet connection in easy reach I might have rated this higher. Lack of backward compatibility renders this PVR pretty useless for me. 18 March 2014
Very good product Excellent machine. Very simple to set up even for those like me who don't really understand technology. Just follow the instructions and you will soon have it working. For those whose broadband hub is not close to the television connecting to the internet may be a problem, but mine is near by so not an issue. Easy to use and record items. Watching on demand is also easy. All in all I am very pleased with this product. Excellent delivery service. I paid the extra to have next day delivery so for a product not ordered until late in the afternoon I had it by 11am the next day. 18 February 2014
Easy to set up, easy to use Took no time at all to get it going and even though it took a while to boot up the first time, it was simple to set it to do a quick start from then on. This product has really been well thought out and the menus are intuitive to use. Can't fault it yet, after about 4 weeks of use. 17 February 2014
Lots of features, good performance. This PVR provides all the latest You View functions, as well as 'Smart' TV functions. Disappointed not to have the USB file transfer function from my older Humax unit. Also let down by complete lack of technical manual, even on-line. 09 January 2014
Great Christmas Gift for my Parents I can't comment on this product myself, as this was a gift for my parents. However, initial reports are that they love it! Apparently it's very easy to set-up and use, so they're happy. One thing to note though - you need to have a good broadband internet connection or use powerline adapters to ensure you can watch the 'on demand' services without constant pauses. 04 January 2014
Just what we wanted Perfect in every way, easy to set up and we are very very pleased with it and the service provided by John Lewis. 17 December 2013
As good as expected It was time to say goodbye to Sky and reviews told me that the Humax 1010 seemed a competent machine. Installation was very easy with only a few entries needed by myself. Picture quality is good in standard definition and excellent in HD. Like some reviews I have read, the OK and surrounding arrow buttons on the remote are a bit annoying as they make a loud click when pressed. A few slight irritations. The ring light when on is quite bright and also for some reason, when a recording is playing, the channel and programme information scrolls across the front of the machine and this is quite eye-catching when the room is darker. For normal live viewing the channel is lit but remains steady. Also I have noticed that unlike Sky's on demand service, Youview's on demand programmes cannot be downloaded and saved for later viewing - they have to be viewed immediately. However, if an on demand item is stopped part way through, it picks up from that spot next time the programme is requested. This lack of recording on demand cannot be blamed on Humax as it is a Youview feature. I have also had the machine stop during an on demand item and a Humax message states that the programme is no longer available and to try later. It then takes several minutes to reset itself. Again this may not be a Humax fault as my broadband downspeed is right on the lower limit but it is worth noting. I still give the Humax 5 stars as its main features have so far been top quality. 13 August 2013
Brill' Bought this for my mum. I think it's better than our Sky+HD box. If you want to save £600+ per year from your Sky subs', get this. There's no wi-fi though, so a wired connection to your router is required. We've had a telephone socket fitted near the rear of the TV, so we plug the router in there and a short ethernet cable does the you-view box. Problem solved. I'm that impressed - i'm getting one. OK we'll lose a few Sky type channels, but I don't really watch them that much (if at all) to justify the cost. 28 July 2013
