Q & As

Humax HDR-1000S Freetime Smart 1TB Freesat+ HD Digital TV Recorder 3.8 5 38 38
Absolute rubbish Collected the item and set it up to replace an ailing older unit. First off it wouldn't get catch up TV, so updated the software using the built in link. Set it up again and set it to record some programmes -fine so far. Checked quickly the next day, recordings were there. A few days later went to watch the recordings - except they are not there! Tried to get them on catchup, that has gone too. Now the box is going back to John Lewis. 07 December 2014
Should have bought this years ago Like many other reviewers I was fed up with paying Sky every month so bought one of these. Should have done it years ago. Set up using existing Sky dish is easy, unplug the Sky box, plug in the Humax. Picture quality is better than with Sky. Downsides are that the Humax box is slow to boot up, around 30 to 40 seconds, the remote control is not as robust a quality as Sky and of course the menu layout and display is different and can take a day or two getting used to. Overall a good product that I would recommend and buy again. 04 November 2014
Goodbye Sky+ Bought this to replace a SKY+ box and have to admit really impressed. One worry I had was that the menus might be slow to transition as I have seen this with other freeview box’s but this is really not an issue. On the plus side the box is quite and fast and love the way it integrates seamlessly with BBC iplayer etc. The only thing I don’t like about it is the remote. The layout is fine it is just the clicky keys I don’t like. But looking to see if I can get an all in one remote (like the Logitech) to replace it. 27 October 2014
Excellent alternative to subscription tv We were paying extortionate sums every month for a tv subscription service that we didn't even use that much. Freesat, and in particular the Humax HDR-1000S, offers an excellent low cost alternative. The box is very easy to use and the seamless integration of on-demand services makes BBC I-player a joy to use. I like the fact that the box comes with all the cables that you are likely to need to connect it to your tv and router. The expansive 1GB hard drive is going to be pretty difficult to fill. Any thing I don't like? The remote is a bit cheap looking and the markings on some of the buttons are a bit small for us oldies with declining eye site. In summary - an excellent well made recording freesat box made by Humax who are one of the better manufacturers of this type of product. 19 August 2014
Humax HDR-1000s - happy customer I decided to switch from Sky a while ago for all the usual reasons and after talking to several friends and colleagues the Humax range was recommended. After connecting up with 3 weeks left on my Sky contract I felt the need to reconnect disappeared as the range of programming met my needs. I concede there isn't a huge range of channels a la Sky but I never struggle to find something to watch. The PVR is great and the software very user friendly and intuitive - for example a program I set to record switched channels and the set flawlessly recorded the program on the other channel without issue. The range of HD channels is limited but at no point have I watched a SD channel and felt cheated. The on-demand works without issue and overall I'm pleased with the device. The only way it could be better would be if it incorporated a streaming service like Netflix. If asked I would recommend the product but say you will get a reduced channel choice but not necessarily a vast reduction in programming quality 14 August 2014
Highly recommended I bought this primarily because I (a) was replacing Sky, (b) wanted 'catch up' TV (iPlayer etc) and (c) have a CRT TV - not a flat screen. In terms of replacing Sky - it does everything the Sky+ box did (and with a better interface), except, obviously, the full range of Sky channels. Not a problem as we seldom watched the Sky-only channels, and we're saving £27/month. Catch up TV on the Humax is very easy to access. Picture quality isn't as good as live, but is perfectly acceptable. I use Devolo mains LAN sockets. Linking via a SCART lead to the TV is great. It just works. Setup took a few attempts as it stalled. Unplugging the Humax box, counting to 10, trying again fixed it. One annoying thing is that you can't alter the order the channels are listed in the TV guide. For some reason 101 = BBC1 (standard definition), 102 = BBC High definition. BBC2 standard definition is further down the list. You can view the HD channels on the CRT TV just fine, but I THINK that when recording, if you record the HD version of a channel, it would take up twice the space on the HDD that recoding the SD channel would. Hence, being able to re-order the channels would be a help. The channel logos in the TV guide are small and not very legible. Startup time is around 40 seconds. If that's too long you'll just have to start it up 39 seconds earlier ! ;) 20 June 2014
Up dating my Humax box Easy set up works well on line, The Electronic Program Guide not as cleat as the old version. But excellent machine. 30 May 2014
Compact and multi functional Easy to install using my old sky dish. No additional setup required. Lots of functionality. Many yet to be explored. Easy to use from the remote. This product does exactly what I required. I would recommend it highly. John Lewis staff gave me all the information that I needed to make my decision. 28 May 2014
