David Nicholls, The Telegraph's Design Editor explores decorating trends for Christmas 2013

This year, materials we traditionally associate withChristmas decoration, such as wood, felt and paper, are being reworked and reintroduced in pleasingly modern ways. Look for classic ideas that have that vital 'with a modern twist' element. We'll welcome back the perennial favourites – snowflakes, trees and woodland creatures – but their forms come intricately laser cut.

As minimalism once again begins to make its mark on the fashion and design landscape, we also see its influence in ornaments that use thetraditional folding techniques of Japanese origami.I love the classic Scandi red and white colour scheme, but have noticed brighter pops of colour coming through this year.
