Grooming - it’s an eight letter word that can strike fear into the hearts of men. All too frequently it carries connotations of complicated beauty routines and endless tubes of salves, creams and balms.
In reality, an effective grooming regimen can be stripped
down to a handful of essential components, and can be
easily established and maintained with only a little effort.
First thing’s first: you’ll need something to keep all your essentials together in one place. Make sure it’s capacious enough to hold everything comfortably, with a zip-top for easy access and a wipe clean waterproof lining to keep any accidental spills from becoming catastrophes. Pick something sturdy that can travel with you if it needs to.
We’ll start at the top with a good haircare regimen - this can make all the difference to your confidence. Keep your haircare simple: shampoo, condition, and if it’s your cup of tea, find a styling product that will keep your hair as tidy or as unruly as you desire.
Scaramouche & Fandango are a good choice for men with normal hair, specialising in straightforward packaging and simple, effective ingredients.
If your hair is prone to dryness or oiliness, consider a more targeted product. Philip Kinglsey specialise in advanced formulas. They’ve got treatments for all the main problems men face, like dry (and often limp) hair; oily or greasy hair; or itchy, irritable scalps
For styling products, don’t be afraid to splash a little bit of extra cash - after all, there’s little point in taking care of your hair and then slathering and suffocating it in budget hair gel. A premium styler will last longer with each application, and smell nicer to boot.
While in the shower, a body wash can really help get you in the right mood for the day. Molton Brown’s extensive range has got something for all tastes, with warm, spicy scents for those tough winter mornings, and fresh, zesty fragrances to invigorate you in the summer.
Often men get so overwhelmed by the notion of facial skincare that they just panic, skip it altogether and hope for the best. At the very least, every man should be exfoliating to get rid of dead skin, and moisturising to keep skin looking fresh and healthy. Electric razors are fairly straightforward, but for men who prefer a bladed razor make sure you’ve got all the equipment you need. Men with beards should be sure to moisturise after shaving, to avoid unwanted rashes and soreness.
You might prefer an Eau de Toilette spray to splashing on after shave. If you’re after a failsafe scent, I’ve never heard a bad word said about Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Eau de Toiilette, CREED Aventus Eau de Parfum or Dior Fahrenheit Eau de Parfum . Just remember to spritz it, not bathe in it! One spray on the neck and one spray on the wrists should be enough to last you for most of the day.
If you’re going to top up in the evening, you might want to consider a different scent to get in more of a post-work mood. Traditionally, evening fragrances are muskier and softer. Some classic choices include Giorgio Armani Black Code For Men Eau de Toilette, and Guerlain L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme Eau de Parfum.
Your main opponent throughout the day will be your environment. That means chapped and cracked lips in the winter, and the risk of sunburn in summer. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm is easy to carry about, and works to nourish lips instantly with rich oils, and vitamins – it’s also clear so you don’t need to worry about inadvertently wearing gloss or glitter.
In the warmer months, be sure not to leave the house without some sort of sun protection. Ultrasun’s SPF 30 Sport Spray is non-greasy and water resistant:
If you want to give your tan a helping hand, James Read’s self-tanning treatments are tried and tested, perfect for subtly building up a natural looking tan.
Remember, an effective grooming regimen can take time to get going, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t see instantaneous results. Use all the products in moderation, as directed by the instructions. Trust me, before you know it
you’ll feel like a whole new man.
