The new season is upon us and that means our virtual beauty shelves are awash with exciting new products and colours. So what can you expect for spring? CC creams, sparkling skull nail embellishments (or pretty pastels if that seems a little too much) and bold, bright lipstick. And what better way to cheer up your well-worn winter wardrobe than with a matte fuchsia lip or luminous cream nails?
Trend: Dramatic nails
Whilst demure pastel shades and two-tone French manicures adorned models’ nails in the SS13 catwalk shows, sultry shades from the other end of the spectrum were there too: think rich, inky hues; standout metallics, and striking shapes.
If you’re opting for pretty and understated, try one of the beautiful pastel shades from OPI’s New York City Ballet Collection. And if you’re feeling a bit more daring, add a hint of gothic glamour with Nails Inc. Bling It On Leather & Skulls varnish. The set features a striking, matte, leather-effect black polish and tiny, twinkling skull and crossbones to adorn your nails with.
Trend: Cherry red lips
The red lip makes an appearance almost every season, and AW12’s trend for rich mulberry lips paved the way for a softer shade for spring. Cherry and fuchsia will add a fresh pop of colour - and really lift your skin tone so that it glows. If red seems too bold paired with a winter wardrobe full of black and navy, dab a little over the top of your lip balm for a more subtle look.

Products to keep an eye out for:
- The multi-tasking CC cream: Clinique’s Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF 30
BB creams were one of the must-have products of last year, with their cult status due to the fact they offer tinted coverage, as well as being a moisturiser, primer, wrinkle and blemish treatment in one handy tube. The latest development is the CC cream (also known as ‘colour correcting’) which not only blends skincare benefits with colour but also helps to even-out your skin tone and brighten your complexion.
Clinique’s Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF 30 will be available at the end of April.
Organic colour: INIKA Crème Colour for Cheeks, Lips and Eyes
Organic and natural make-up has come a long way since the days where the only shades available were various tones of brown, and INIKA is a case in point - their mineral eyeshadows come in every colour of the rainbow. And in February, this Australian brand launches their new crème range for eyes, cheeks and lips: think smooth, silky formulas that glide onto your skin and contain nourishing jojoba oil, vitamin E and sweet almond oil. If you’re searching for an easy-to-use product to achieve a soft, rosy glow, their Crème Colour for Cheeks and Lips is definitely worth a try.
INIKA’s Crème Colour for Cheeks, Lips and Eyes will be available in February.
A radiant complexion: Melvita Nectar Bright Brightening Essence
Hunting for something to give you radiant skin and an even complexion? Try Nectar Bright®, the new brightening range from certified organic brand Melvita. Inspired by 5 white flowers - Wintergreen, Narcissus, Bellis, White Lupin and White Sea Lily - and their ability to protect themselves against the sun’s UV rays, the 4 products work to target existing dark spots and prevent hyperpigmentation. The Brightening Essence, a concentrated daily treatment, and the first step in the regime, combines the 5-flower extract with a complex of papaya, olive and lemon to help combat the effects of everyday environmental aggressors such as pollution, and reduce dark spots.
Melvita’s Nectar Bright® range will be available in May.
