Coco Chanel, an inspiration to all women
Familiar as we all are with the global brand that is Chanel, I think that the more practical vision of Coco Chanel is less well known. I find her inspiration underpinning all I do. Her earliest designs sought to free women from the confines of Edwardian life and conjured up clothes that allowed complete freedom of movement, recognising that women led active lives, and needed to feel comfortable in their clothes. An active woman, she defined sporty, casual chic, even introducing bathing suits in an era that was very buttoned up.
As a designer of brand jewellery, I feel very strongly that it should fit your life and how you want to feel. I don’t have one pair of earrings I wear every day, rather I have a collection to fit all moods and occasions. I don’t want to be restricted by conventions and rules. This summer I was particularly inspired by the Great Gatsby, and the sparkle and panache of that revolutionary time. Low-waisted dresses, short hair, layered pearls, glittering jewels. And women were allowed to vote! An intoxicating freedom, on many fronts, for women, and a celebration of life and being alive after the horrors of the First World War.
My Deco Claudia Bradby Pearl Sterling Silver Tassel Drop Earrings are the perfect after-work pick-me-up if you are going out, and work equally brilliantly for a lazy weekend lunch when you want to feel that little bit more special. They have a good balance of style without overpowering you, or being too overt. Whilst featuring beautiful, hand-selected pearls, they are a long way from the twin set and pearl look! They are a valuable addition to your jewellery wardrobe.
Similarly, my Deco Claudia Bradby Large Pearl Silver Tassel Necklace, White features a simple lustrous white pearl with a diamond cut silver chain tassel, a key design feature of the 20s. This is a loose, almost casual look, which works perfectly over a white shirt, as well as layering with my long pearl rope necklace, in either white or purple; or even the glittering Long Light Pyrite Pearl Necklace, to channel the art deco look. Again, the sparkling silver chain lifts the mood, but doesn’t overpower. Try it over black for a more stand-out look.
If you feel more like embracing a tone of the 20s, try the stunning Freshwater Pearl Sterling Silver Trapeze Drop Earrings: they work brilliantly worn on their own, or combined with our glittering Druzy Quartz and Pearl Pendant.
It’s hard to imagine a time when women couldn’t vote, were dressed by maids, and life was somewhat, ahem, staid. Whatever you do, add a bit of pizzazz to your jewellery this summer – I urge you to celebrate life!
