The latest suncreams
While there might be more exciting items for you to pack before setting off on your holidays, such as that bathing suit you purchased with anticipation in January, it’s important not to overlook the practical items such as a good sun cream. For many this becomes a last-minute purchase from the airport or nearest supermarket, opting for the most eye-catching bottle; but with so many options available, we’re on hand to help you make an informed decision about the best way to protect yourself and your family.
People are looking for different things from their sun creams, whether it be a water-resistant one so that they’re free to jump in and out of the pool throughout the afternoon, or a once-a-day formula so they don’t feel the need to constantly reapply, or even one that’s going to help boost that tan a bit with some natural-looking bronzer incorporated. So we’ve identified some of the key areas of concern to help guide you when buying the right cream for you.
It’s no secret that kids find the notion of applying sun cream an unnecessary inconvenience that their parents insist on forcing upon them. So our advice is to go for products with really high SPFs that are lightweight and easily rubbed in, thus helping to reduce the number of times you’ll need to reapply and the time that the process takes. Clarins Sun Care Milk is a 100% mineral screen that's designed specifically for little ones and their delicate skin. It offers 50+ UVA/B protection and is water-resistant too, which is ideal if they’re fans of the pool or sea.
However, if a spray bottle isn’t ideal for you, then there’s always the Sunsense Ultra Cream that comes in a pump bottle and is designed to protect the whole family, thus eliminating the need for taking several bottles for different people. Also, for the really young ones there’s the Sunsense Toddler Milk that comes in a practical roll-on bottle making it ideal to slip into your handbag without the fear of it leaking; perfect for day-to-day use.
The ageing effects of sun exposure can be a big worry for some people and have them running for the shade. But now there are new formulas on the market that specifically help with these issues. The most popular new product is the Shiseido Expert Sun Aging Protection Lotion, which is available in SPF30 or SPF50. It’s sand proof and water-resistant with Sheiseido’s patented SuperVeil-UV360TM technology that protects skin from photo ageing, UVA and UVB rays, plus prevents dark spots and wrinkles. Another great product that helps fight against ageing with sun exposure is the Sunsense Anti-Ageing Face Cream, which comes in a normal or matte invisible tint finish. Both versions help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with nourishing vitamins E and B3.
If you have particularly sensitive skin, then you’ll know just how important it is to protect yourself from harmful rays. Look for a sun cream that is perfume free with a hypoallergenic formula and a high SPF. A good example being the Ultrasun Super Sensitive Family Formula, which is also free from emulsifiers and preservatives. It offers great value for money in a large 500ml bottle and the non-greasy consistency makes it perfect for use on kids and adults. An added bonus is that the cream helps to prevent prickly heat and it helps to sooth skin that’s been damaged by the sun.
When you’re on-the-go, a great product to have in your bag to use for those troublesome sun-sensitive areas is the Sisley Super Stick Solaire. It’s enriched with emollient Camellia oil and nourishing shea and mango butters, providing deeply moisturising comfort for the skin.
Keep it natural
If you’re concerned about the amount of chemicals you’re putting on your skin when applying sun cream, then try an all-natural formulation. One of our most popular organic brands within suncare is Melvita with their Prosun range. Available in SPF30 or SPF50, it’s enriched with plant oils from dry and extreme climates for optimum sun protection, without the use of chemical filters.
An extra boost
Sometimes you want to see the results of sunbathing a bit quicker than mother nature allows, so rather than make the mistake of going for a lower SPF and risk getting burnt, it’s wise to just fake it a little bit. Guerlain's Terracotta Sun range is a fantastic way of giving your skin a bit of extra natural-looking colour whilst protecting yourself against UV rays in SPF15 or SPF30 for paler skins.
Whilst we might have shied away from very high SPFs in the past, new formulas and an increased awareness of sun damage means we're happy to slather on an SPF 50. In the past these creams have been incredibly thick and hard to rub in, but the latest ones available are lightweight and invisible when applied. One of our hero products is the Riemann P20 Sun Cream that’s non-greasy once absorbed and restores natural moisture levels of the skin. The added bonus to this product is that it provides you with 10 hours of sun protection with a fuss-free once-a-day formula that even remains 90% effective after swimming.
