Britain has a long heritage of fashion design. Paris might have more élan and Milan greater pizzazz but these shores have their own unique understated style. That's the case for children's fashion too, where a raft of designers have created their own distinctive look, one that is still uniquely British. Here are a few of their stories.
It's easy to spot a Little Joule - and not just because of the hare appliqué that's on every garment. Little Joule is an offshoot of the award-winning Joules label, which had its origins in the county shows of the 1980s. This children's brand echoes its grown-up style, with practical yet colourful clothes and a trademark quirky look.
Proudly Cornish, Seasalt has been going almost as long as Joules. Their close connection with the sea is very evident in their sensible and understated nautical collection. Ethics and provenance are important issues for them too - they were the first fashion company in the UK to use cotton certified by the Soil Association. Recently they've teamed up with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute to bring a collection of beach-inspired tops.
Based in London, Hucklebones has married classic British tailoring with today's trends and turned out feminine and sophisticated clothes for girls aged 3 months to 10 years. Many of the fabrics have been sourced from British mills, with their long tradition of high quality weaving. In 2011 they were winners of the Junior Designs Award.
K for Keeps is entirely, proudly British. Every process is meticulously managed, from hand picking the Scottish and Lake District-manufactured fabrics to the design stage, where they create unique yet contemporary pieces. This Yorkshire-based company has even designed some pieces exclusively for us.
We British have always welcomed a little foreign flair. This designer originally hailed from Denmark but since settling in London she's skillfully blended English style with a Scandinavian eye for colour. The result: playful, bright and comfortable children's clothing, all made from beautiful, easy-care fabrics.
Fred Perry was the first British heritage brand to blend sportswear with streetwear thanks to its instantly recognisable Laurel Wreath logo. Exclusive to John Lewis and designed by a Londoner, Funky Monkey's ethos is about kids just having fun - in their case, making durable, funky and fashionable clothing for your little monkeys. Their inspiration came from the nephew of the designer. Dissatisfied with what the high street offered, the uncle decided to create his own collection. How avuncular of him!
Quintessentially British with a dash of preppiness, Hackett London has quickly established itself as one of the country's smartest fashion labels. Boasting English classics and sports-inspired clothing, your little man will look very dapper - especially in his Aston Martin Racing polo shirt.
In the 13 years it's been going Green Baby has gone from producing fabric nappies to producing organic and fairly traded boys', girls' and baby fashion, along with skincare and nursery accessories. Their bug sleep suits and romper suits are particularly cute.
