Accessories can express your personal taste and help you make a room unique. Choosing the right items as well as how we arrange them are key to creating the right look for you. This season one of our biggest trends is "Coastal", a look that brings all the cool fresh feel of a day by the sea. Crisp blues and sun bleached whites are mixed with accents of red to give you a relaxed, seaside feel.
So why not give you home a lift this spring and head to the seashore? Here are a number of hints and tips to help you achieve that relaxed coastal vibe. And if you like the look, have a browse through the Coastal decorative accessories shop to find all those lovely pieces in one place. Or if the marine theme doesn't float your boat, there are others to choose from here.
Try: Grouping small photo or picture frames in odd numbers as this will add a balance and symmetry to your display. Think outside the box when choosing locations; as well as hanging on the wall, photos and pictures can look great standing on a mantle piece or even have larger prints leaning against a wall to break up a large expanse of plain wall space.
Buy: Michael Walsh-Galway Bay Print on Canvas, (or Cork). These beautiful photographic prints use stunning colours to add drama to a room and convey memories of happy holidays gone by.
Try: Using mirrors to bounce the light around and create an interesting focal point on an otherwise bland area of wall. My top tip is to use large mirrors in small places to open up the room and give the illusion of more space. Carry the Coastal theme through your room by using mirrors in soft muted wooden finishes, reminiscent of sea worn driftwood.
Buy: John Lewis Drift Mirror; pared-down calm in an unvarnished finish, or Sophie, a round mirror in light mango wood for a little more warmth.
Try: embrace your inner collector and make a small display of beautiful vases on a shelf, windowsill or mantelpiece. Try pairing items of different colours, textures and shapes to really draw attention to them. Use found objects such as seashells to add to the beachcomber look!
Buy: Parlane Hurricane Bastille Lamp H30cm. Parlane has a great range of bottles, vases, jars and lanterns which would look great in a mix and match display. Play around with arrangements, making sure you have a good range of heights and sizes. Again, remember the odd number trick - things look best grouped in threes or fives.
Try: Not all of our day to day knick-knacks add beauty to a room, so stash away bits and bobs in clever storage solutions. This saves your room from looking cluttered and helps people really focus on the beautiful items you have on display!
Buy: these really unusual Parlane Utility Drawers; they're a perfect place to keep small accessories and keepsakes, with a distressed, recycled look about them.
Try: Little items and decorative pieces could be the heirlooms of the future, so if you do follow trends make sure you buy items you really love! Use them to brighten a windowsill, shelf or side table.
Buy: Again, Parlane comes up trumps with this lovely Globe on a stand or this quirky long-legged seagull.
Try: Adding a warm glow to spring and summer evenings by lighting a range of candles. Whether it be pillar candles inside a beautiful glass vase, of a row of tealights along the centre of a dining table, candles will add atmosphere all year round to your interior.
Buy: John Lewis Stone Candles. These tealight-sized candles are exquisitely detailed to provide an astonishingly realistic pebble-like look. Or if you're really loving the Coastal theme, this lighthouse tealight holder could be just your thing!
