G Plan Vintage is an exclusive collaboration between the iconic furniture maker G Plan and the celebrated British design team, Hemingway Design. The result: a Fifties and Sixties-inspired G Plan Vintage Collection, available exclusively from John Lewis shops and online.
Each product in this capsule collection is inspired by a mid-20th century original from G Plan's fascinating archive and named after the year in which the original first appeared. G Plan Vintage armchairs and sofas blend timeless details, like angled and turned legs, with a contemporary approach and quality British craftsmanship. Handcrafted in Melksham, Wiltshire, the skilled craftsmen follow a 21-stage design and development process to ensure each piece of furniture is made to last - and extremely comfortable.
Tilly Hemingway from Hemingway Design, says of this joint venture: "G Plan came to prominence in a golden era of British Design that emerged and developed from the 1951 Festival of Britain. This era of 'Mid Century Modern' design is now inspiring a whole generation of young designers once more, and I cannot tell you how exciting it has been to be able to trawl the G Plan archive with a brief to re-interpret the brand's rich history for a new generation of 'modernists'.
"Being able to sample and manufacture in the UK, develop custom prints, work with high quality materials, and in its first season for the collection to be sold in John Lewis, has been a bit of a dream come true."
These are my favourite accent chairs and sofas from G Plan Vintage:
1. The stylish Sixty chair , in muted mustard, is equally at home in a living room or quiet corner. The turned legs, contrast piping and deep buttoning complete the elegant design. Here, less is most definitely more - the epitome of simplicity!
2. The Sixty Seven's low slung appearance is the perfect blend of past and present, with its gently contoured arms and turned wooden feet, and is as distinctive as it is comfortable. With its soft grey colour you have a plain palette to work from, so why not jazz it up with different cushions? There's a choice of sofa sizes and a matching armchair and footstool.
3. The deep and inviting Fifty Five armchair is a timeless blend of quality and comfort in a stylish accent chair with individual style. The elegant wooden arm detail - perfect for resting a glass of wine on! - and sleek turned legs combine vintage design with a modern feel.
Vintage is a popular look this year, and if you're after well-made furniture that harks back half a century these comfy additions could sit very well with your décor.
