Home trends autumn/winter 2012

What’s in store and online for your home this coming season

The John Lewis Home Studio team brings you 3 key home furnishing trends for autumn/winter 2012; nostalgic Home Comforts, simply modern New Japan, and the old-world glamour of Theatre.

New Japan

Blending Eastern aesthetic and modernist simplicity, our New Japan trend is pared-back and contemporary. Clean lines and natural textures create a tranquil sanctuary away from the pressure of urban life. Think Wabi Sabi  to understand the essence of this collection; a celebration of traditional craftsmanship, block-print patterns, and the understated allure of natural materials.

Monotone greys and blues sit at the core of the palette, harmonised with neutral tones and accented with sharp hits of hot chilli, fiery ginger and kimono pink. Warm up the look with mismatched scatter cushions and bed linens, where bright colour is woven through organic and irregular optical prints. Be bold and use a backdrop of muted tones to offset your own creative pattern mixes.

Home Comforts

Nostalgic colours and shapes from bygone eras bring warmth and cheer to your home. The furniture and textiles feel familiar and cosy, while iconic kitchenware pieces are given a quirky, modern twist as they’re reinvented for this collection.

The colour palette revolves around retro colours like midnight blue, Winchester green and reborn red. You’ll find these on exquisite furniture accent pieces such as armchairs, upholstered in 100% wool, perfect for getting comfy with a cup of tea. Oxford blue, citrine and vintage coral highlights perk up your kitchen, as do whimsical logos and playful prints.  Joints, fixtures and mechanisms are exposed to give lighting an industrial feel.

This blend of design from the past and materials from the present creates functional pieces to pass down from generation to generation.

Theatre

Opulence and glamour, reminiscent of the art deco trends seen on the catwalk, are recreated in home décor with our lavish theatre trend. Think ornate accessories in burnished gold and platinum, combined with high-gloss surfaces and rich fabrics for Gatsby-esque drama. Key colours include deep, imperial purple and peacock blue highlights. Polished metallics draw attention on the table and this style of decorative dining could prove ideal for Christmas dinner.

Bed linens are decadently heavy and lend themselves to sophisticated layering over dramatic bedsteads. Bold geometric prints feature on rugs, fabrics and statement furniture pieces. These complex brocades work best on curvaceous, tailored pieces where parameters are played out in rich show woods and sharp wing backs.
