Working with graduate designers - video
At John Lewis we're committed to introducing the very best of British design into our home collections, and our Design Collective ranges represent a showcase of established and emerging UK design talents.
But in supporting home-grown design skills, it's also important for us to nurture new talent and help bring fresh looks and names into the market place. That's why in 2012 we've engaged in two projects to help young product designers realise their potential.
Firstly, with help from designer Bethan Gray and lecturer Magnus Long, we worked with the final year students at Central Saint Martin's College in London by giving them a brief to design multifunctional dining solutions that would adapt to smaller living spaces and people's busy lifestyles. At the end of the project we chose a final 6 out of the group, and are helping them to develop the commercial potential of their products.
In early summer we introduced and sponsored a new designer's award at Europe's largest graduate design show. We're now working with the winner, Ollie Hrubiak and his Finn chair, in order to get his chair commercially produced and in our shops in 2013.
In this video the students tell us more about their design experience and aspirations.
