How to match lamp shades and bases - video guide

Find a sense of proportion

Buying lamp shades and bases separately gives you more options than buying a complete lamp, and the chance to put your own creative stamp on your décor. But it can be tricky to get right - not only do you need to consider the style of the room, you also need to make sure you match the size and style of shade and base. We have a huge range of shades and bases, and you can also have a beautiful lamp or ceiling shade made to order so you get the right size for your room

To give a room a formal classic look, try adding a matching pair of lamps either side of a sideboard or mantlepiece for a sense of elegant balance. Look for tapered shades, and match with classic crystal and candlestick-style bases. Different styles and shape of base and shade in different parts of a room break up space and give a more relaxed, casual feel. Wood bases offer this look with little effort and work well with natural linen or cotton shades.

Always follow the bulb wattage guidelines of the lampshade you're using, as well as considering whether the shade will deliver the amount of light you want for the space.
