The art of Cath Kidston
Cath Kidston's designs have dominated the UK high street for a number of years, yet we still can't seem to get enough of her! With a vast range of home products and accessories including sewing bags, bed linens, towels and kitchen accessories, it’s hard to find much she doesn’t do. So why do we love her so much?
For me it's the great prints she creates year after year. They're the perfect mix of vintage and quirkiness that appeals to so many tastes and age groups. The unique combination of contemporary design and nostalgia means she is just as relevant today as she was when she first started out.
Whilst most of us are familiar with the brand and design style, we probably know less about the woman behind it all. Cath Kidston Ltd was founded in 1993 when Cath opened a small vintage shop in Notting Hill. She sold fabrics, brightly-painted furniture and wallpapers, all fondly remembered from her own childhood. From small beginnings, her interpretation of English country style soon became a big success.
Realising there was a gap in the market for practical, vintage-inspired products, Cath soon began producing her own designs. Taking traditional print and using them in a fresh, surprising and modern way, the first products were simple, practical and good value, but always kept a sense of fun.
Nowadays she's classed as one of the most influential and original design companies to emerge from the UK. She's also a huge global success, with fans loving her showcase of traditional English style.
Cath Kidston remains creative directive of Cath Kidston Ltd and is still heavily involved in the day to day goings-on of the company. In 2010, she was awarded the MBE for services to business.
With her popularity not looking to wane anytime soon, keep a look out for more inspirational products to come from this well-loved brand.
