Some creature comforts for your getaway

There's nothing like taking to the road and catching up with new cultures, people and places. Everyone has their own idea about what they want from a getaway: café lounging or club-hopping, sightseeing or thrill-seeking. I love being pleasantly disorientated by strange foods and unfamiliar streets myself. You could call this 'being lost' but I like to stay optimistic (if you prefer to stay on track however, a satnav is always handy).

Much of the magic of travel though is leaving the familiar behind - still, no matter where your tastes take you, there are slices of home that are always welcome. After all, nobody ever romanticised about forgetting the corkscrew and there are few things worse than an airport layover without distractions.

So, read on for some tips on staying spruce and entertained wherever you go as well as some suggestions for capturing the moment - all without weighing you down.

Apple iPad Mini

Stay entertained

We all look forward to those big travel moments like daytrips and other activities, but what about those little lulls in between? Lengthy hotel check-in queues can drag and I particularly dread the shoeless trudge at airport security. Smaller format tablets like the Apple iPad mini or Google Nexus 7 can be lifesavers in these scenarios, especially the 3G enabled ones with mobile browsing. Being a bit of a traditionalist, I prefer to keep an  eReader to hand instead, for the weeks-long battery life and option of reading in direct sunlight.

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver

Look your best

Once you've got to your destination you'll want to make sure you look your best before heading out. The rigours of snoozing in transit or just racing from A to B can take its toll and most accommodation can be lacking when it comes to the finer points of grooming. Complimentary towels? Of course. Complimentary hair dryer and shaving kit? Not so much.

Braun's M90 Mobile Shaver is an elegant solution to errant facial foliage. Resembling a palm-sized USB keyring, it can be slipped into a pocket in a pinch. At the other end of the hair care spectrum is the luggage-friendly  BaByliss Nano Dryer which is about half the size of your average hairdryer. This is also your chance to dispense with that grubby travel toothbrush and upgrade to something like the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean. This electric toothbrush has been made with travel in mind and comes in a clever hard case that keeps it clean while doubling as a USB charger.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT5EB Camera

Capture the moment

After arriving thoroughly entertained and restoring your looks to their true glory, you're going to need irrefutable proof of your adventures. Taking photos and film clips on your mobile is fine for day-to-day use, but blurring and poor contrast can sap the life from your holiday snaps. Compact cameras are doing amazing things these days. Full HD video and high powered zooms are common, while some models - like the Sony WX series are getting smaller all the time.

All of these travel toys are great but don't forget to unplug and take some time for yourself during your trip. Ditching the browsers and getting some local recommendations can lead you to some pleasant surprises.
