Samsung made a huge splash at the Consumer Electronics Show this year with their latest F range of Smart TVs. With nature-inspired stand design and barely-there bezels, they certainly looked the part, but we were a little more curious about what new capabilities they were hiding beneath the surface. Now that we've had a closer look, we're
Samsungs F8000sits at the top of the LED range, followed closely by the F7000. High contrast devotees will also be pleased to hear that there's a plasma version too in the shape of the F8500. So what new functions are on offer? Read on for our
S-Recommendation (…or 'so, you don't know what to watch?')
Samsung's S-Recommendation function takes centre-stage with promises of more intuitive viewing. This means that the TV pays attention to what you like to watch, and when, across multiple devices. This helps it to build a go-to list of suggestions that it can use to help you out when you're stumped for some entertainment.
So if you like to watch the news first thing in the morning, a soap in the evening and a little sports at the weekends, your TV will be one step ahead with somethingappropriate. This really comes into its own when you get voice control involved though. You can ask the TV for some viewing ideas, or get really specific and suggest something like a favourite actor and genre and let it go to work.
Voice and motion control
More advanced voice and motion control pushes the concept even further by refining everything that made the original great. It now understands more natural speech patterns and two handed gesturing for zoom and rotation effects - just like on a smartphone or tablet. All of this is made possible by an onboard 5-megapixel camera that can also be used for HD Skype chats and activating your personal profile through face recognition.
Apps and catch-up TV
These TVs also promise to deliver the complete range of catch-up TV services soon after release, from BBC iPlayer and ITV Player to 4oD and Demand 5.
The F series comes future-proofed thanks to Samsung's Smart Evolution system. This makes keeping up with the latest upgrades as simple as slotting a kit into the back
of your TV.
