The hottest new styles to try
The jean is probably one of, if not the, most hardworking item in our wardrobe. After finding that game-changing pair, the ones that lift the bum, lengthen legs we hate and create nothing but a smooth, perfect shape at the hips, it’s pretty tough finding anything else that’s good enough. Reinvented every season, we’re no longer limited to our capsule blue washes, edgier blacks and occasional ‘trendy’ coloured leg. A deep burgundy skinny, slouchier boyfriend silhouette or a subtle flash of a rip or slight fray are now perfect for summer and winter and anything in between.
This summer, pickings are rich. Prints have been having a moment on everything for as long as we can remember, and denim has playfully followed suit. Photographic landscapes, sketched florals, monochrome stripes and animal motifs are weekend-fresh with a simple white tee, strappy sandals and sunnies. Then there are the new hues, the single shades that add a hot pop to an outfit, or a soft feminine touch; pinks are where it’s at in terms of summer’s perennial pastels, white is the season’s top colour pick, while sweet candy colours have gone dustier. Boyfriend styles have also reached a new high, as have their love-worn effects such as slashed knees, raw edges and heavier whiskering. Looking like you do actually live in them is the key.
For a bit of a round-up and a few little tips and tricks for taking on the trendier ones, I’ve shared my favourite picks below.
Seriously hot property, head-to-toe white has been trending since before the SS13 shows back in September. It’s clean, self-assured and chic, and can flit anywhere between floaty and romantic, to sharp and crisply tailored. Denim wise, it’s definitely a little daring, but can be made way less scary when done simply. Think feminine, dainty strapped camisoles, casual linen shirts and classic tailoring up top. Add a cropped leg with these Mint Velvet Smart Jeans; stretchy, high-waisted and featuring just a touch of a gold zip, they show off your slimmest part and go just as easily with flat sandals as they do with a pointed court.
Not Your Daughter’s Jeans have also upped their colour quota this season, featuring a token white skinny in again, a shorter ankle length. Have a little browse through all the different brands and their the styles to find your favourite.
Anything goes here, really. Prints are decorating pins everywhere, adding punch to everyday outfits. The beauty of these is that there’s a style for all, those not used to attracting so much attention to bottom halves can dip their toe in with lighter tones such as this neutral paisley Mango pair, and the brave among us can rock everything from bright blooms to quirky owl and flamingo motifs. Brilliant for slimmer frames to add some variety and shape, the brighter and bolder you go, the better. Browse Ted Baker’s designs for full on fun with their Natural Kingdom and Dancing Leaf printed skinnies, and take a look at Mango and Not Your Daughter’s Jeans for an array of stripes and pretty florals.
