Jamie Oliver HomeCooker by Philips 4.1 5 7 7
Bad buy I bought this a few weeks back. I am an average cook but everything I have cooked in this pot has been fit only for the bin. I have followed the recipes and would be pleased if any one could tell me where I have gone wrong. Surely Jamie Oliver should be more careful what he puts his name too. 22 June 2013
Jamie's hot pot The + points first... The cooker is well engineered and solidly built. It would seem to be set for many years of domestic cooking. In use, the cooker does all that it claims - but no more than that. It heats up quickly, stirs quietly and steams adequately, just. In only my first month of ownership, I have successfully turned out many delicious and satisfying meals, but none from the supplied recipe book. Many of the meals that I enjoy repeatedly have readily transferred from conventional cooking to this appliance. It makes nice yogurt at 40 degrees but needs restarting every 99 minutes. The capacity of the cook pot is plenty large enough for 4-6 portions, but I only cook for 1 or 2 so sometimes my food looks small and insignificant down there on the bottom of the pan but the results have always been pleasing. There are a few things I would add or change if I had the chance. A non-stick pan would be advantageous. A smaller, lighter pan could give a better and more economical(?) result when cooking fewer portions. Variable stirring speed. Sometimes it is necessary to give a helping hand and some ingredients do climb up the side of the pan, or lodge in the centre, where the stirrer blade does not then move them again. It seems to me that a faster or variable speed would help. Other negatives: I always use the next higher temperature setting than suggested. Even so, some operations take longer than conventional cooking and none is ever quicker than before. The pan is quite heavy for holding single-handed when plating the cooked food. The steamer function is quite slow and gentle, particularly so when the upper tier is used. The timer tops out at 99 minutes. If a longer time were available, this could replace the slow cooker. As everyone else here says: it's too expensive! In essence we have a hotplate and a motor, but there is no directly comparable competitor at the moment... Overall 8/10, recommended with caveats. 12 January 2013
Great product I am really pleased with home cooker, saves me so much time and space, and it is easy to use. 04 January 2013
Excellent! I am not one for gadgets but was tempted by this due to the unique stirring action. As the cooking is solely my domain, I need all the help I can get. I fully expected this not to live up to the claims as has been the case with so many other innovations but was amazed to discover first hand how good it really is. Already, I would not wish to be without it. Food scorching on the bottom no matter how low the heat is now a thing of the past. The flavours are much more intense than the same meals cooked on the hob and only stirred occasionally. The "Full Monty' breakfast in the recipe book is to die for and the ease of preparation and cooking compared to the "Traditional" cooked breakfast has to be experienced to be believed. A full 100% endorsement from me. Expensive but worth it. Should it come down in price, I will buy another as a spare. 31 December 2012
Cooking from scratch - easy Just like having Jamie Oliver in your kitchen! - this HomeCooker stirs, simmers, stews, steams, boils and fries. Includes pasta insert, steaming basket, glass lid, pan, stirrer and tray (all dishwasher-safe). A unique combination of automatic stirring, perfect temperature and timer up to 99 minutes, with ready signal and automatic shutdown. From breakfast to dinner you can prepare delicious slow cooked dishes like stews, curries, pasta sauce, homemade soup, risotto and paella. 20 November 2012
Does what it says on the tin I bought this in the middle of kitchen renovations as I have no other means of cooking. It's pretty good for cooking all things saucepan-based and the stirring thing is pretty effective. I can't make the "pasta insert" work for cooking pasta (which in my world, is boiled rather than steamed) but other than that the gadget is proving itself pretty useful. 19 November 2012
The social cooker! When my wife got me the Philips homecooker I was very excited. It claims to be the cooker that cooks itself. Really clever, I initially thought, but then I got to thinking ‘Where’s the fun in that? If ‘it’ cooks the food that well, who will praise me for the meal I prepared and used every pot and pan in the kitchen to make. Unpacking and assembling the cooker was really easy. It did not look out of place in the kitchen and would easily break down into its various parts for easy storage. I decided that I was going to attempt Jaimie’s Chicken Cacciatore dish from the recipe book included. I prepped the ingredients as per the recipe and grinned with a small hint of satisfaction that this machine still needed me to do the basic things like grind up spices with a pestle and mortar and marinate chicken. Perhaps this is a team event after all. I have to say that with regards to ease of use this could not be any simpler. Just add the ingredients at the right time and the integral stirrer does the work whilst you get on with your afternoon. (Although it is sad to admit that I watched the stirrer the first couple of times I used the cooker to make sure it was working properly) The timer is fantastic and every meal becomes a simple task if you follow the step by step instructions of adding ingredients, setting the timer, and then adding more ingredients. The food itself is surprisingly tasty, really tasty in fact, and you still get that sense of achievement when your diners compliment the food. The best thing of all is the lack of dirty pots and pans. You simply remove the stirring attachment and pot and put them in the dishwasher. It is not a cooking appliance that would replace you as a cook, but it is a handy appliance that would allow you to hold a dinner party and at the same time allow you to actually talk to your guests rather than disappear every minute or so to stir the food in the frying pan and pots. 28 October 2012
