Q & As

John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine 3.7 5 41 41
Very disappointing and poor customer service Was given this machine as a birthday gift and it was not used for over a year due to me being pregnant and having my new baby. Within the first few uses, the machine skipped stitches, made noises and then stopped working altogether. I was keen to finish the dress I had started for my daughter, so spent hours working through the troubleshooting guide all to no avail. I have contacted John Lewis and they refuse to offer a refund or replacement, despite the machine being faulty. There are several reviews from customers who have experienced the same problems - and just because I didn't use the machine within the year (with good reasons) they are refusing to help me. I have pointed out that they should reconsider and offer me a good will refund, but they still refuse. Please avoid at all costs - I have a broken birthday present and an unfinished dress for my daughter. 25 November 2014
Has made sewing a pleasure After years of trying to master a heavy old machine which finally blew up on me, this mini machine has transformed sewing into a pleasure. It is light and small enough to have out all the time and is capable of doing all the techniques which I need. The instructions are clear and simple to follow and it is extremely simple to use. An excellent buy! 18 November 2014
Excellent machine for it's price range. I've been sewing since I was four (using a toy Singer machine) so I have forty years of sewing machine experience when I say I was really pleasantly surprised by this machine. Mine came free with my subscription for Craftseller magazine but I wouldn't hesitate on buying another based on my experience with it this week. I have used it for sewing small decoration pieces I sell on my craft stall and for doing some basic free motion type sewing (drawing with my machine) which I do with feed-dogs in place and a regular sewing foot on my normal machine. This machine has tackled all the jobs I asked of it and more. I wouldn't use it to make curtains, but I could definitely make a child's dress or do repairs to clothes with it. The tension was perfect from the offset, and for such a small machine it has a good weight. I know weight shouldn't be an issue, but I've used small basic machines like this before that I have had to hold down so they didn't move all over the table, this needed no such help. The grip of the foot onto the material is something I found too loose with other cheap machines like this, but this John Lewis machine had no issues, it held the fabric in place and sews a lovely straight line. I wouldn't hesitate on recommending this machine as a first machine for anyone, or as a back-up machine for crafters. 11 November 2014
ideal first sewing machine Bought as a gift for my granddaughter aged 6, she loves it especially the colour, purple is her favourite..... lovely to be able to choose from such a good range of colours too. Nice and compact not too heavy, ideal as a first machine. She loves that it is a 'real' machine and not a toy too.. Highly recommended. 11 November 2014
Very disappointed! I bought this machine only a week ago and got it out of its box this morning to try out. Sadly I never got that far, the bobbin failed to wind and so preventing me from even starting! I've now read a couple of recent reviews saying the same thing. Must have been a bad batch from the manufacturers. I've spoken to customer services who've advised me to return to store for an exchange or refund. So I'm off now to get my refund, I've lost my faith in this model so won't be exchanging. Sorry John Lewis I'm not a happy bunny! 08 November 2014
Such a shame. The machine worked beautifully to start out with but very sadly upon the third use, it seemed to have acquired the fault that some other reviews have mentioned - the bobbin stopped working properly. It is a lovely machine, very small, convenient and aesthetically pleasing and it did sew wonderfully - it is just a shame it had to change its ways. John Lewis were very cooperative and offered a refund or a replacement - many thanks to Gavin, the kind helpline assistant. 03 November 2014
Good for a beginner / amateur & small projects My 12 year old daughter had this machine for Christmas last year. After almost a year, we are still pleased with it. The instructions are geared towards a child with easy to follow diagrams. Threading the machine is also quite straightforward - simpler than my 'singer' model. It is quite noisy in operation but stitches beautifully and has options to vary the stitch for decorative effects. The foot has a safety feature integrated so a child's finger can't get under the needle. All in all, a good purchase. I'm thinking of buying another for my third daughter this Christmas. Negative points: Noisy operation, doesn't have a light so you need your own spot light. 26 September 2014
It just stopped working I loved this machine to start with but after a year and only used a dozen times it just stopped working and had to be scrapped. In store I was told that quite a number of them did that which was why they were only guaranteed for a year. A complete waste of money such a shame. Not what I expect of JL. 23 August 2014
