John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine
Good for a beginner / amateur & small projects
My 12 year old daughter had this machine for Christmas last year. After almost a year, we are still pleased with it. The instructions are geared towards a child with easy to follow diagrams. Threading the machine is also quite straightforward - simpler than my 'singer' model. It is quite noisy in operation but stitches beautifully and has options to vary the stitch for decorative effects. The foot has a safety feature integrated so a child's finger can't get under the needle. All in all, a good purchase. I'm thinking of buying another for my third daughter this Christmas. Negative points: Noisy operation, doesn't have a light so you need your own spot light.

It just stopped working
I loved this machine to start with but after a year and only used a dozen times it just stopped working and had to be scrapped. In store I was told that quite a number of them did that which was why they were only guaranteed for a year. A complete waste of money such a shame. Not what I expect of JL.

JL mini sewing machine
Bought this for my 6 year old granddaughter's birthday.
She was so thrilled and proud and couldn't wait to get started. Within 15 minutes she was happily stitching away.
Good features are: really safe stitching foot and machine does not go too fast. She needs help with threading the needle and bobbin - after all she's only little.! Machine a bit noisy but apart from that it is a smashing little machine, a ideal starter for a young person - I was really impressed. My only problem is to find ideas for her stitching.

Great for beginners
I bought this for my 10 yr old daughter for Xmas and didn't want to spend a lot incase it was a fad. I also purchased a great sewing book " sewing school 2" by amie petronis plumley and andria lisle. She has completed loads of the projects, which are perfect for her age. The sewing machine instructions are fantastic and the speed just right for a beginner. The only downside for me was the lack of light, although my daughter has no problems threading the needle. When you thread the bobbin, you must try not to put too much cotton on, as it becomes uneven and jams. She has made cushions covers, bunting, bags etc. You are however limited with the type of material you can use. Now I know it's not a fad, we will be upgrading this Xmas to a better machine.

I have no sewing skills at all but faced with shortening a very wide pair of voile curtains, I decided to take a chance and buy a simple sewing machine. The John Lewis Mini sewing machine had caught my eye some time ago, so I went ahead and ordered one on the internet. It arrived within 48 hours and is brilliant. The price is excellent for someone new to sewing and the colours are fun. It's very simple to use - the instruction manual should win an award for its clear instructions and diagrams - and I'm very pleased with my curtains! The only tricky bit is threading the needle which requires good eyesight and a steady hand.

Great Little Machine
Bought for my 12 year old daughter, she's used it to make a cushion case - so far, so good. Seems easy to use and set up, ideal for a beginner. I might even have a go!
