I bought this yesterday after a few weeks of deliberation. Reviews were mixed, mainly around threading it. I'm a first time sewer, and it did take me a couple of hours and a youtube video to thread it - I didn't even know what a bobbin was - but once threaded, I couldn't be more pleased. I've already made my very first cushion. Yes, there were a few hitches when I started, mainly as it wasn't threaded properly, but I persisted. Am very pleased with the product, and if you're hesitating over this one, don't!

I bought this sewing machine for my 9 year old daughter. She absolutely ADORES it. She was able to start using it within minutes of me showing her what to do and has not stopped since. My only comment is that there is only one speed, ie, on or off, you can not slow the machine down by pressing down the foot pedal less. That said, I would highly recommend it, as it is a fantastic product for a fantastic price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by libwho All you need in a sewing machine!
After years of owning a heavy complicated machine that could stitch every combination under the sun, I decided that since I never use the fancy functions and need a crane to lift it. It was time for a change. This new machine is so light weight you could pick it up with just two fingers. Also its easy to control and runs at a beautiful speed allowing for accuracy. The combination of stitches is all you need for every day sewing. Fantastic Product and great value. One happy customer.

Looks lovely & a great size for my 11 year old daughter.....only thing is, I am struggling to thread needle to know if it works well....Attempts so far have resulting in threads breaking, fabric jamming in feeder on plate. Am going to give it one last go with a friend who has much machine experience, otherwise it goes back & I look to invest in something more substantial for my daughter. Will re-review if things change!

First impression was good. It was well packed and arrived very quickly and was a lovely looking machine for the money. It was bought for our Grandaughter for Christmas as she wanted me to teach her how to sew . ( I am a dressmaker) I read the reviews that were mixed and decided that if John Lewis were going to sell a sewing machine with their own name on it that it would be ok for a beginner at least. I my self learnt on a small sewing machine. I also read the description of the machine and was aware that it was only suitable for light to medium fabric. My excited granddaughter arrived for her first lesson a few days after Christmas however we could not get the machine to sew even on light weight fabric. We tried different threads and a new needle but still couldn't get it to sew.
We decided to send the machine back for a refund which was not a problem.
I let her try my own complicated sewing machine on slow speed and she got on just fine and she was still sewing at 8pm when her mother came to take her home. Continuing with the mini sewing machine could have put her off sewing for life.
If you buying a sewing machine even for small jobs I would recommend you buy a better quality one.

Had a very disappointed daughter on Boxing Day when this didn't work. Surprised John Lewis are selling this as everything I have ever purchased there is of such good quality. Not this unfortunately.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Godkat Tension very poor
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and tried it today for the first time. The top stitch looks fine but beneath the fabric the thread is very loose and can be pulled out. We've adjusted the tension to maximum and minimum, tried different fabric but to no avail. Afraid it will be going back to the store.
