John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine
Sent it back
First impression was good. It was well packed and arrived very quickly and was a lovely looking machine for the money. It was bought for our Grandaughter for Christmas as she wanted me to teach her how to sew . ( I am a dressmaker) I read the reviews that were mixed and decided that if John Lewis were going to sell a sewing machine with their own name on it that it would be ok for a beginner at least. I my self learnt on a small sewing machine. I also read the description of the machine and was aware that it was only suitable for light to medium fabric. My excited granddaughter arrived for her first lesson a few days after Christmas however we could not get the machine to sew even on light weight fabric. We tried different threads and a new needle but still couldn't get it to sew.
We decided to send the machine back for a refund which was not a problem.
I let her try my own complicated sewing machine on slow speed and she got on just fine and she was still sewing at 8pm when her mother came to take her home. Continuing with the mini sewing machine could have put her off sewing for life.
If you buying a sewing machine even for small jobs I would recommend you buy a better quality one.

Don't buy it
Had a very disappointed daughter on Boxing Day when this didn't work. Surprised John Lewis are selling this as everything I have ever purchased there is of such good quality. Not this unfortunately.

Tension very poor
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and tried it today for the first time. The top stitch looks fine but beneath the fabric the thread is very loose and can be pulled out. We've adjusted the tension to maximum and minimum, tried different fabric but to no avail. Afraid it will be going back to the store.

Machine worked perfectly for the first few months, but as many others have expressed it soon started becoming faulty- the bobbin did not work properly and the thread just 'birdnested' on the bottom of the fabric and after a few stitches it would jam and make an awful noise. I went into John Lewis in Sheffield and told them about the problem and I am very unhappy with the service I received. The woman was very unhelpful, implying that the issue was due to my negligence even though I had said that I had tried everything I could think of and followed advice I'd found on the internet to resolve the problem. She then said she couldn't test it as "there was no place to"... didn't realise shops didn't have worktops or sockets! She changed the needle after I asked twice but then said there was nothing that could be done as I did not still have the original box AND the original polystyrene! As my partner works in John Lewis I know this is not sufficient customer service, especially not in an establishment that prides themselves on it! I was not once offered an apology or a replacement or refund was not even mentioned. Feel as I have been not taken seriously as I am perhaps slightly younger than the average customer. Not happy at all.

Very disappointing and poor customer service
Was given this machine as a birthday gift and it was not used for over a year due to me being pregnant and having my new baby. Within the first few uses, the machine skipped stitches, made noises and then stopped working altogether.
I was keen to finish the dress I had started for my daughter, so spent hours working through the troubleshooting guide all to no avail. I have contacted John Lewis and they refuse to offer a refund or replacement, despite the machine being faulty. There are several reviews from customers who have experienced the same problems - and just because I didn't use the machine within the year (with good reasons) they are refusing to help me. I have pointed out that they should reconsider and offer me a good will refund, but they still refuse.
Please avoid at all costs - I have a broken birthday present and an unfinished dress for my daughter.

Has made sewing a pleasure
After years of trying to master a heavy old machine which finally blew up on me, this mini machine has transformed sewing into a pleasure. It is light and small enough to have out all the time and is capable of doing all the techniques which I need. The instructions are clear and simple to follow and it is extremely simple to use. An excellent buy!

Excellent machine for it's price range.
I've been sewing since I was four (using a toy Singer machine) so I have forty years of sewing machine experience when I say I was really pleasantly surprised by this machine. Mine came free with my subscription for Craftseller magazine but I wouldn't hesitate on buying another based on my experience with it this week. I have used it for sewing small decoration pieces I sell on my craft stall and for doing some basic free motion type sewing (drawing with my machine) which I do with feed-dogs in place and a regular sewing foot on my normal machine. This machine has tackled all the jobs I asked of it and more. I wouldn't use it to make curtains, but I could definitely make a child's dress or do repairs to clothes with it. The tension was perfect from the offset, and for such a small machine it has a good weight. I know weight shouldn't be an issue, but I've used small basic machines like this before that I have had to hold down so they didn't move all over the table, this needed no such help. The grip of the foot onto the material is something I found too loose with other cheap machines like this, but this John Lewis machine had no issues, it held the fabric in place and sews a lovely straight line. I wouldn't hesitate on recommending this machine as a first machine for anyone, or as a back-up machine for crafters.
