John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine, Red

Product information

This retro-inspired John Lewis Mini sewing machine is a perfect sewing machine for beginners. It has enough functions to let you experiment and have fun, but not so many that it's overwhelming.

Features include: 10 stitch options, 2 needle positions, drop-in bobbin, and free arm (great for adjusting cuffs or trousers). It also has a double presser foot and push lever reverse for when you want to reinforce a stitch. It's suitable for light to medium fabrics, so you can mend and make things as you wish.

A twin needle can be used with the John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine, in the straight stitch function only.

Hints & Tips: To produce the best results from your sewing machine please be aware that the needle should be replaced after approximately 8 hours of continuous use. We have a plenty of needle packs to pick from when the occasion calls.

Please be aware: Though our John Lewis Mini sewing machine is light, compact and great for sewing projects, only lightweight fabrics are advised. For beginner projects including cushion covers without a zip, buntings and similar, the Mini is ideal. For projects that involve curtain making, hemming jeans and sewing heavier fabrics, you may prefer our JL110 model which is fully equipped for the task.

Q & As

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 60 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sewing machine Just love my new sewing machine for them little jobs excellent 13 May 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by JUST RIGHT Unit is right size and shelf configuration about right, but slightly unsure which way the lower of the 3 shelf units should be placed - a clue would be of help. Page 8 of User Guide refers to "shrives". Dictionary describes word as "hear confession of, assign penance to, and absolve...". "Shelves"? 13 May 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great little machine I bought this machine about 4 years ago to make a few projects like cushion covers, drawstring bags, bunting and I have just made my first top on it. It is not for use with thick fabrics but cottons it does really well with. This is stated in the manual. I have just changed the needle. Have found that it makes a loud noise if the fabric too thick or if the machine needs a clean. As I now need to add an invisible zipper to my top. I am just wondering if I can attach a zipper foot to it? 25 April 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Ideal for 8+ We have 2 of these machines which are perfect for straight stitch on plain cotton fabrics. The Zig-zag is only suitable for non stretch fabrics in our opinion. So for small projects like dolls clothes, cushions, bunting and appliqué this is a good starter product. For an introductory machine they are a very affordable option. A child interested in sewing clothes however should probably go for the next level John Lewis Machine which has a light and can cope with a variety of materials. 23 April 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lovely machine for a beginner. We bought this for my 10 year old daughter to learn on. It is very simple to use and, having only one speed, it feels quite safe. That said, it does some fancy stitches as well as the basics. She has loved experimenting on it. A very good purchase. 17 April 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by How very disappointing. Having purchased this for my 12 year old daughter to learn to sew on, the first one broke within a day. The store replaced the machine and we tried again. The second one is even worse. I should have read the reviews before I made the purchase. I now have a very disappointed daughter. You would expect a product sold under the John Lewis name to be of much better quality. I am hopeful when I return to John lewis for the 2nd time within a week I will receive a full refund. I can then purchase my daughter a belated birthday present that actually works. 09 April 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Broken just after a year! I bought this machine as a Christmas gift in December 2013. It has been used sporadically throughout the year for light sewing. About 6 cushions in total have been sewn together using the machine. However, it has begun to miss stitches and it makes a loud noise when switched on. I didn't expect it to stop working just after a year. This is very poor value for money! After taking the machine to a John Lewis store an employee said that she couldn't fix it and it was just supposed to be a beginner's machine anyway. As the 1 year guarantee had expired she said nothing could be done! Not good enough! 08 April 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Broken after very little use I was given this as a Christmas present in 2014, but have only in the last couple of months started to use it. Have been using on light materials and doing very simple, basic stuff to make children's costumes for a school play, and it died on me, leaving me in somewhat of a tricky situation. I had trusted the John Lewis name would mean a reliable even if low-cost machine. Very, very disappointed, and in need of an urgent replacement. 25 March 2015
