I bought this machine about 4 years ago to make a few projects like cushion covers, drawstring bags, bunting and I have just made my first top on it. It is not for use with thick fabrics but cottons it does really well with. This is stated in the manual. I have just changed the needle. Have found that it makes a loud noise if the fabric too thick or if the machine needs a clean.
As I now need to add an invisible zipper to my top.
I am just wondering if I can attach a zipper foot to it?

We have 2 of these machines which are perfect for straight stitch on plain cotton fabrics. The Zig-zag is only suitable for non stretch fabrics in our opinion. So for small projects like dolls clothes, cushions, bunting and appliqué this is a good starter product.
For an introductory machine they are a very affordable option. A child interested in sewing clothes however should probably go for the next level John Lewis Machine which has a light and can cope with a variety of materials.

We bought this for my 10 year old daughter to learn on. It is very simple to use and, having only one speed, it feels quite safe. That said, it does some fancy stitches as well as the basics. She has loved experimenting on it. A very good purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by chepstowsb How very disappointing.
Having purchased this for my 12 year old daughter to learn to sew on, the first one broke within a day. The store replaced the machine and we tried again. The second one is even worse. I should have read the reviews before I made the purchase. I now have a very disappointed daughter. You would expect a product sold under the John Lewis name to be of much better quality. I am hopeful when I return to John lewis for the 2nd time within a week I will receive a full refund. I can then purchase my daughter a belated birthday present that actually works.

Rated 2 out of 5 by MrLL Broken just after a year!
I bought this machine as a Christmas gift in December 2013. It has been used sporadically throughout the year for light sewing. About 6 cushions in total have been sewn together using the machine. However, it has begun to miss stitches and it makes a loud noise when switched on. I didn't expect it to stop working just after a year. This is very poor value for money! After taking the machine to a John Lewis store an employee said that she couldn't fix it and it was just supposed to be a beginner's machine anyway. As the 1 year guarantee had expired she said nothing could be done! Not good enough!

I was given this as a Christmas present in 2014, but have only in the last couple of months started to use it. Have been using on light materials and doing very simple, basic stuff to make children's costumes for a school play, and it died on me, leaving me in somewhat of a tricky situation. I had trusted the John Lewis name would mean a reliable even if low-cost machine. Very, very disappointed, and in need of an urgent replacement.

Having already left a review (can't see it on here though) I stated that I hadn't tried sewing a zip with this machine.i have now made a zipped pencil case involving 2 layers of material, one of lofted interfacing and a doubled over zip.,went through without a hitch. Not saying I'd make clothes but for bags and pencil cases and other small items this machine is a dream.

I was amazed when waiting my turn to buy this sewing machine, yes there was a queue, to hear the assistant tell everyone that this machine was only for up to 12yrs of age!
As a professional sewer of over 48yrs I went ahead and bought it for my 27yr old daughter as she is a very basic beginner. It is more than adequate to make lightweight cushion covers, summer dresses, tops and skirts for the next few years. AND it only needs a small space to store it, a very good thing in a London flat.
You, John Lewis, are really missing a trick to try and sell the dearer version and dismiss this machine.
