John Lewis Camden Storage Bed, Oak, Double
Just in time
After receiving straightforward advice in the Leicester store based on what we wanted, we ordered this bed and arranged for it to arrive in time for our visitors - just in time. So they helped assemble it. Well, we left the drawers for another day; but there was no difficulty in assembling the bed or drawers once all the parts were laid out and identified. Other comments submitted re mattress.

Time consuming to assemble but worthwhile
I chose this because of the 6 storage drawers. I wouldn't plan to put anything very heavy in them but they should be fine for the spare bedding, winter jumpers and craft odds and ends that I plan to use them for. It took me approx half a day to assemble on my own with trusty electric screwdriver. I had unpacked all the wooden pieces and checked them over first but didn't worry about the various screws etc. However when I got to the last drawer I found that one of the fittings didn't have a thread on it so I improvised and glued it in and it seems ok. I echo one of the other reviews that the bedstead really needs to come with a much smaller allen key, I had some spare ones that fitted otherwise I would have really struggled. The drawer fronts are veneer but overall match the rest of the bed and I'm pleased with the finish on the head board and footboard, and the sides. It feels pretty solid when I lie down on it. I did put some pads on the feet to help move the bed eg when decorating, I needed 8x 20mm pads and 2 slightly bigger ones for the central legs. The drawers alone weigh 30kg so moving it with a mattress on top would otherwise be a herculean feat. I plan to take everything out including the drawers on the rare occasiions that I need to move the bed. Overall I'm pleased with the end result.

wow this was difficult
I am VERY used to putting together furniture. This was seriously difficult. The instructions said "two people 40 minutes" hahahahahahahaha, at one point my 16 year old son said "It would have probably been easier if they had given us an axe and a tree and told us to build our own bed". It took us 40 minutes just to unpack and check all the pieces. In the end it took us four hours (with breaks for screaming with frustration) to put this together. To give an example you have to screw in bolts in a notch in a piece of wood - the Allen key supplied with it is too long to fit in the notch (fortunately we found an old Allen key in the garage that was shorter and fitted). Alarmingly when we then both tried lying on it, panting with exhaustion, it creaked, so I hope it holds up. If you are going to supply things that are this difficult to construct you should really offer an assembly service for it too. I'd love to see two people do this in 40 minutes - maybe if they were trained to the level of a Formula 1 pit team and practised doing it for months they might just manage it - but I still have my doubts.

We love our new bed. The height of the bedstead is just right for our chosen location and the storage provided by the 6 drawers is more than welcome. The assembly was straightforward too.

Points for concern
We have very recently purchased this storage bed, having previously been interested in the Sullivan bed. We were not convinced by the side tables on the Sullivan and were pleased when we saw this model with 6 drawers.
We had a problem with the side rails of the bed, because one dowel on each side had broken off. Having contacted the supplier, this matter has now been rectified. However, we have noticed that some of the slats have started to laminate (we took delivery of the bed on 13th March!) and when the men came to replace the side rails, some of the clips for the slats broke. They have said they will arrange for a replacement set to be sent to us, but this is not good when we have only had the bed for just over a week.
When we decided to order the bed, we went to our local store in Reading, but they did not have any on display. Nor apparently, were any on display anywhere in a reasonable distance from Reading. The sales person did suggest that perhaps we did not need to try the base out, and that it was the mattress that was important, after all.
We were quite disappointed therefore when the bed was delivered and we found that, despite the fact that the description on line said that the bed was 'solid oak', the drawer fronts were in fact only an oak veneer. Additionally, the sides of the drawers were laminated MDF and that there were no metal runners for the drawers #as I believe there are in the Sullivan#. The drawers just run on a piece of softwood fitted to the frame, in a groove in the MDF. We do have concerns therefore about how this is going to wear.
