John Lewis Chelsea Touch Task Lamp
Nice Lamp but pity about the limited bulbs available
Nice lamp, well made, but realistically you can only use a GLS bulb - Halogen bulbs will work, but because they are 'clear', the filament is too bright to look at and therefore the lamp can only be used in certain positions.
We have tried a few LED lamps and have also contacted the lamp suppliers and Osram, but LED bulbs simply don't appear to be compatible with the Dimmer installed with this lamp.
There is nothing on the John Lewis web page for this fitting to say that you can't use Compact Fluorescent bulbs, but I suspect they won't work, as they don't generally function with dimmers.
We have found that a 25 watt GLS bulb is generally sufficient anyway, so perhaps it isn't a big deal if 25 watts is used occasionally - just a pity it couldn't be the LED equivalent of 3.5 watts.

Works well as a bedside light with one drawback
I have used one of these lamps as a bedside light for over a year, and I am generally satisfied with it performance. Because it is touch controlled, it is far less fiddly than most other lamps to turn on and off and to dim at night, but you do have to get used to avoiding touching it accidentally.
The main drawback is with an incandescent bulb, it can sometimes emit a quiet but still noticeable buzzing sound when the lamp is off. Slightly tightening or loosening the the bulb makes the noise go away, but it eventually returns.
If anyone has used a LED bulb with this lamp, I'd appreciate a comment, as this is something I'd like to try to get rid of the buzzing.

Nice lamp - poor instructions
The lamp itself is nice, but the information on the bulb required is not good enough. This light needs a dimmable LED bulb or halogen bulb. It will not work with a normal energy saving bulb. One of these works: http://www.johnlewis.com/151462/Product.aspx
This could all be solved if a bulb was included with the lamp, which would not be unreasonable, and would save a lot of returns/returned journeys.

Poor quality from the manufacturer
I have had 4 of these and all have been returned with defects.
I really like the design and still want one but have now given up, I would recommend a through inspection prior to purchase, list of my defects:
A circle of the brushed effect was missing Right in the centre of the lamp.
A large scratch on the base of the unit.
The lamp shade was stuck at an angle.
Would not operate normally, touching had to be a full finger press there was no difference from setting 1 -2 setting 3 flickered etc.
It's a shame. John Lewis accepted the returns no question and provided a fine service, this review is not a reflection on the stores service only the quali of the product.

Fab - bought another!
This is a really stylish and useful bedside lamp. Great price in comparison with similar lights we've seen.
My husband bought one a while back, and found the varying levels of light great, as it's good to have the brightest setting if it's the only light on in the room, but a lower light when reading off an iPad for example.
I am about to give birth and I think the lowest setting will be useful when feeding baby in the middle of the night without disturbing my husband and convincing the baby it's still nighttime!

Great lamp for the price
Great touch sensitive lamp all over. The handle to twist and turn sideways/up+down is easy to use.
The bulbs are 40w and at the brightest setting it is too bright. The lamp has 3 stages of brightness then off, so the "4 stage" title is a little mis-leading.
Overall a very good purchase although it would be good to include a bulb as standard.

Good bedside reading lamps.
We bought two of these lamps to use for reading whilst in bed. We chose them for their simple yet elegant design, colour (bronze), the fact that they are adjustable (you can focus the light according to preference) and because they are touch sensitive. The latter, however, does have one slight drawback - if you accidentally touch the lamp, you have to go through the motion of touching it once or twice more in order to turn the light off. Despite that, we are pleased with the lamps and do not regret having bought them.

Chelsea Task Lamp, Bronze
The lamp is very elegant and functional. However, it is not cat proof as our cat has found out how to light the room merely by brushing up against it.
