Attractive to look at and the circuits are easy to set up.however as an educational toy it is lacking.
The instruction booklet is printed in script far too small to read easily and the diagrams are also much too small There needs to be some explanation as to what the diagrams mean. A child of 8 years can not imagine easily if at all what electricity is and how it travels along the wires. An explanation is required on how to make sure there are no breaks in the circuit and the function of the switch. There should be a several simple circuit es to do before going on to parallel I circuites, furthermore the red wires are slightly too
short to go across the board from corner to corner. I had to join wires together.
As a first experience of electricity and circuites the instruction are greatly lacking and definitely not suitable for a child of 8 years, unless they are gifted.
However with guidance from an adult the experience was fun.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Jack2000 Great gift
This was a Christmas present for my 10 year old son, which kept him very busy until we lost the instructions. It is now redundant.
Being a loyal john Lewis customer, I called customer services to be told there was absolutely nothing they could do about it. When I politely asked if I would be able to find any instructions on the web the lady at customer services surprisingly hung up on me. This was not the outcome I had expected!
Please, please can we have a copy of the instructions as this toy is a fantastic gift but is absolutely useless without instructions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Robertg6pky ELECTRONICS SET, robust and good quality
My nephew had one of these kits for Christmas, and I was able to help to build some of the circuits.
The kit is robust and well made, and all the circuits built worked OK. Most of the transistor circuits are OK, but some of the circuit descriptions could be improved, and all the circuit diagrams made larger.
The values on the small value capacitors shown on the circuit diagrams could be explained, ie. The value of the 0.02uF capacitor is shown as '203' on circuit diagrams. I have not seen any explanation of this format, ie. 20 followed by 3 zero's in pF...
It would be helpful to see the connections for the IC's actually connected to the circuit symbol.
The circuit symbol for the AM Radio IC is wrong (looks like the symbol for a NAND gate, connected the wrong way round!!).
The correct info for this part can be found by googling 'TA7642 Radio IC'
The value of the potentiometer is not shown at all on the circuit diagrams.
Could the manual be put on the website in case the original is lost or damaged?
Many thanks for reading this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Spric Great product, good value but missing an electronics guide
My seven year old son loves this set and will do the circuits on his own before bed. However, it's missed a trick in not including some sort of explanation or guide as to why the circuits are set out as they are. My son has become very skilled at following the instructions, like lego, but is none the wiser as to how to build his own circuit or what a capacitor does. There is a glossary but it doesn't really help. Including something that fits in with the Primary National Curriculum would be a winner. Instead I've sent off for a Basic's Electronics Guide to help us both learn a bit more.

This is an excellent product that our 8 year old boy has a great time with, but he has also learned lots along the way. It is very well made, has a good variety of things to make, and the instructions are very clear. One small improvement might be a bigger guide that explains why the circuits use the components they do; there is a glossary of components but it doesn't explain their effects in a circuit.
** One thing to watch out for, particularly if children are unsupervised - if a mistake is made in the order of wiring it can lead to overheating of components and potential fires **
We've just learned this the hard way and will have to replace the set, which we are happy to do as it has been so good.

Please correct the title - it's an electronics set. It's early days yet, but my 9 year old granddaughter has been engrossed by this toy all morning. Note that batteries are not supplied with the set.
