Tried this chair in the shop and liked it so went ahead and bought one in chestnut. Have now had it for two weeks and am really pleased. It is very sturdy, very comfortable and has a good range of (adjustable) movements. Good lumbar support too.Was a little concerned by some of the reviews about assembly but to be honest there wasn't too much of a problem. The arms need a bit of patience but so long as you don't tighten the back plate screws - as it tells you not to - they are fine. (I have had to assemble two as the first one had to go back due to a defect. No problem with either) An expensive purchase but it feels like it will last a long time.

Well designed, well made and exceptionally comfortable. Very good value for money. Most of the adverse comments about the difficulty of assembly are rubbish. If the normal engineering procedure is adopted of inserting ALL screws and only turning a few threads BEFORE tightening them all down, then there is no problem.
Delivery guys were terrific.

The plastic coated legs are rubbish, and were chipped. Padding on the front leg support of the chair is not equal across the front. And then there is the assembly of the arms. I'm good with flat pack furniture but I was beginning to get stressed towards the end. The bolts on the arms are a nightmare and apart from being awkward to get in, can decide to cross thread! The quality of the leather and plastic is rubbish. And the only thing going for the chair is that it is comfortable!
Suggestion, buy cheaper elsewhere and one which comes ready assembled. DO NOT BUY!

Rated 1 out of 5 by David12456 Very Poor Chair with Safety Issue
The build quality of this chair is poor. The plastic covers on the base legs constantly come off from day one. The chair significantly lost 'padding' in the foam filling and lost comfort over a 12 month period.
However the worst problem was a metal rod that started to protrude out of the leather covering at the front of the seat. This came to light when I stood up and scratched my leg. I also tore some clothing on this as well. Eventually this rod stuck out by more than 25mm. This is dangerous!
After just over a year I called John Lewis to return the chair and they have been excellent in dealing with this. I have received a full refund and they picked up the chair from home to return it. The John Lewis driver who picked up the chair was shocked at how dangerous this chair was.
I recommend no-one buys this product.

I could not believe that John Lewis would sell such a shoddy item. The laugh is they say it cen be fixed in 30 minutes. This is impossible. It needs at least 2 strong men as the screw holes do not line up and it has to be forced into place.

The chair is really, really comfy (I have a bad back and the lumbar support is a great feature), and looks good too, but the arms are as bad to assemble as all the reviews say. A NIGHTMARE. The holes don't line up and it needed two adults to force them into place whilst I tried to tighten the bolts. The Allen key that's supplied is not up to the job and nor was my Bosch power driver. Eventually I had to use a hex key fixed to a long armed wrench to get enough leverage. I'm very, very surprised JL stocks something so badly designed.

After reading the mixed reviews about the self assembly aspect of this chair, I decided it was probably the ability of the purchaser rather than the quality of the chair. However, I have come to the conclusion that the mixed reviews must be a result of a variable quality being produced. I completed the fixing of the arms of the chair, using a different screw of my own, hence the two stars.
I am very pleased finally with the chair but very displeased with the trouble I had with the self assembly aspect of the arms. I needed some strength in my arms to cope with the chair arms.

This is my first review and I felt compelled to write and share my experience. I am a big fan of John Lewis and always get good service there but this chair is not suitable for high usage. I work from home and give the chair a lot of use and wanted to invest in a quality item. The stuffing had gone flat well before 2 years had lapsed. By the time I contacted the store a couple of months after the 2 year guarantee had run out they advised that there was nothing that they could do. In short, for occasional use this is a great chair but if you work from home it is not fit for purpose. Lessons learnt I have just bought a new chair from Hopewells. My main complaint is with the manufacturer rather than John Lewis although I do feel that a better outcome could have been achieved if JL had fought my corner.
