John Lewis Freestanding Parasol, 300cm
a real disappointment
I really wanted the other reviews to be wrong about this parasol, but unfortunately they weren't.
It was clunky and cumbersome, and a bolt holding one of the ribs together sheared off the second time we used it (not in windy conditions, either) rendering the umbrella useless. Badly finished, too, with a ragged hole at the top where the mechanism fits through the canopy. Before the breakage I was going to put up with this, even though I'm sure it would eventually have frayed and worsened. Not up to JL's usual standards.

The parasol looks good. However in the slightest breeze it moves all over the place. I purchased the 4 granite slabs, one of which was badly scratched but they do seem to hold the base in place, although have had no strong winds as yet to put them to the test. Overall I would say it is an ok product but that would be it.

Scary in even a slight breeze
We have the parasol, the base and the 4 granite slabs. There were some issues with only 2 slabs arriving, one of which was damaged, and also a missing spanner, but this was soon sorted.
Quite frankly we are NOT happy with this product. Even a slight wind blows it around, the parasol tips and moves in various directions, meaning that you cannot stay shaded. It is NOT relaxing to be under, and all of our many visitors feel likewise. We will be contacting John Lewis to ask for a full refund as we don't have the confidence that it is safe.

Nothing wrong with this product
Going on previous reviews you may consider this a poor product all I can say if you order the kit, fix it correctly its a great product.
Fitted four slabs, had it out now in wind and rain and no movement on the base at all, OK you would be daft to have it up in high wind conditions, but thats the issue with all parasols. Ever been in a pub garden when the wind catches the table and the base tips it up.??
Fit it with 4 full size slabs and no problem, Looks smart and does the job.

Not Strong Enough
Parasol looks nice and would do the job perfectly.......except despite the granite slabs recommended being used from the start and the parasol being in a sheltered position, a slight breeze blew the whole thing over and the parasol base crosspiece broke; the whole order had to be returned.

After assembly parasol immediately tilted over as needed the stability of slabs to hold in position, Product description fails to point the need for slabs and as such renders the parasol not fit for the purpose for which it is sold and was returned immediately. In fairness the returns procedure was straightforward and staff courteous and helpful.

very good product
Delivery and product as advertised all to the usual John Lewis standard. All four slabs delivered (although I think it should say that there are four slabs on the website) - obviously caused problems for some. Easily drilled to the patio and secured without any problems.
However, the cover ordered for a freestanding parasol does not fit and had to order elsewhere. Did not return it as we were able to cover another parasol in the garden.
More suited to the South of France but, hopefully, we will see the sun again soon!!

Don't be fooled by this product
If it's too good to be true it probably is. It seems to be very good value for money? That's because nowhere on the website is there any mention of the fact that this parasol needs to be oredered alongside weights to be fitted onto its base. I only found out the day I tried to install it and it would not stand up. I then ordered granite slab weights also from John Lewis. Again the website gives little information, but I guessed they would arrive in a pack of 4 x 10kg. Instead only a pack of 2 slabs arrived, enough for 2 quarters of the foot of the parasol. Weeks down the line the parasol still does not stand up. Poor design, poor website.
