The John Lewis JLWM1408 washing machine has a 1400 rpm spin speed, which reduces drying times and keeps fabric creasing to a minimum. It is also rated ‘A++’ for energy consumption and washes a very large 7kg load while being economical on water, detergent and energy. Its large porthole makes loading and unloading simple.

The ‘Aqualift’ wash system used on the JLWM1408 brings water to the top of the tub and distributes it evenly for an optimum wash. There are 14 wash programmes including a gentle option for wools, lingerie, easy iron and intensive options, plus a quick 20-minute programme that washes 3kg of laundry for when you need that outfit tonight!

Hugely disappointed I bought this machine three weeks ago after my previous washing machine, a Bosch, (13years old) had broken down. The main reason I chose this machine was that it had a separate spin programme - a feature missing from the current Bosch range. It has been a huge disappointment and If I could send it back, I would. Apart from the quick wash which you can't make hotter or spin at a faster speed,, it is a disaster. The rest of the wash times are tediously long and I really query the high energy rating. The programmes are not as flexible as they first appear and there is not a specific programme for a coloured wash. The 1400 spin vibrates through the house and the heavy cotton wash came out looking like a concertina!It has been the single most expensive purchase that I have bought and seriously regret. Give me a Bosch anytime! 26 March 2013

Consider the long wash times and lack of spin options before purchasing I picked this washing machine on brand confidence, cost, flexibility of programmes and the quick wash. I had read the reviews, but last few are in my opinion the most accurate unfortunately they were not posted when I purchased mine or I may have reconsidered. The wash cycles are between 2 1/2 and 3 hours, which is much longer than my old washer ( I understand its because it takes in cold water to heat up but don't know if that is true). It takes forever, and therefore longer timer options would be really useful in order that it could be set the previous night, to come on early morning, and be finished for when I get up, otherwise I only get 1 load done a day! As the previous reviews wrote, the programmes are not flexible enough; for example the quick wash ( 20 mins) only does a slow spin, but I cant cancel the slow spin, as my old machine did, therefore it has to do the short spin as part of the programme, which leaves clothing too wet, then I have to set it for another 1400 spin, which takes 17 mins- why cant I just cancel the quickwash spin, and pick a 1400 spin or have the spin speed choice on all programmes? Not flexible enough for me, and too long programmes. Service, delivery times and the guys who delivered item, were excellent, they phoned to say when they were coming, and so I didnt have to be waiting in all day- very polite too. Definitely recommend John Lewis for the customer service. Sorry to be negative, but the above comments are really important to me 16 January 2013

Quality product - so far so good! I live in a hard water area so the real test for this washing machine will be over a long period of time to see how it copes with a build up of limescale. Whilst it is unfair to rate a washing machine on factors beyond its control I think the extended guarantee has given me a peice of mind that most vendors cannot match. This washing machine appears to be built well and feels like a quality product. The delivery guys as always, were courteous and respectful when installing it. No mess or damage caused. So I have no complaints currently. 11 January 2013

Really pleased Very pleased with this product. Being slim fit it fits very neatly under work surface. Good selection of programs, although some are excessively long. The 20 min wash is a god send, although spin at the end is reduced and I have to do a separate spin which takes a further 17 mins. The quick setting on the longer washes works well although once again the spin at the end is not enough, so a further spin is required. It would be good if I could choose which spin I want, usually 1400 ( which was my main reason for buying this model) but to increase the spin on all programs is not available. This is the main reason for only 4 stars! 09 January 2013

excellent washing machine I am delighted with my recent purchase of this washing machine. The machine was delivered promptly by two very helpful men who took away my old (broken) machine as well (I paid extra for this service). The instructions were clear, in plain english and easy to follow. It was up and running in no time at all and has been constantly used - I cleared the backlog of washing in not time at all.....the machine is not as deep as my old Zanussi machine but I have not found this a problem. The washing comes out lovely and clean and the spin speed ensures I don't have to wait for days for the washing to dry! 07 January 2013

best yet delivery men - should have a bonus - they were the best ever and customer service FIRST CLASS................machine is one of the best so far, only gripe is the wash programmes are too long - could do with being able to cut the wash times down..................machine on spin is so quiet - only reason for a four star is programme times ! 30 December 2012

Excellent washing machine Have had this for a month now and, with 2 boys under five, it has already had plenty of opportunity to prove itself. The machine feels well built and solid with easy to use controls which don't unnecessarily over complicate the wide range of programme options. I particularly like the chance to vary spin speeds and reduce the duration of washes. Even with dirty clothes I have found the machine copes well on the lower timings which is useful when there are several loads to get through. The spin is very efficient and quiet, it is only while spinning that the machine makes any noticeable level of noise. We bought this to replace a Meile as we couldn't justify the high cost of another and I am pleased to say that I can't see any difference in washing performance. No good if you have integrated units Quiet wash and spin, Only downside I have is it is no good for integrated units as the soap/conditioner draw is a small one and only pulls out to the edge of the worktop 17 December 2012
