Q & As

John Lewis New Fine European Duck Down Standard Pillow, Medium 2.5 5 12 12
Pungent odour The smell from this pillow had a pungent animal odour. Despite leaving it out to breathe for 5 days, the smell was as strong as ever. Took it back and got a different type of pillow 16 September 2014
Very disappointed, smelled fantastically bad. After going through a blind touch test in store, it seemed I prefered the feel of this duck pillow. I wish I smelled it though, or even read these reviews. It smells... really smells. Opening it up at home, my pallet interpreted it as more mouse wee than duck smell, either way it's unpleasant. Maybe I was unlucky with strength of the stench but after 5 washes and 2 soaks, it's not shifting. Very disappointed with John Lewis as I expected higher quality. Waste of money. 04 September 2014
ultimately not usable! This pillow would have been ideal but sadly we were defeated by the awful farmyard smell which just does not dissipate. Earnestly hope the manufacture investigates this urgently! 29 July 2014
Comfortable (soft) pillow The pillow is soft, but just about supportive enough for me. It works as a top pillow over a harder one. I haven't suffered feathers poking through that I read of with some pillows. It does need a good airing though. I don't think the smell out of the bag is as offensive as some would have you believe, but I would give it serveral days as a minimum. 20 July 2014
Awful smell The pillow is average - reasonably comfortable but the smell is really disturbing. I washed it, aired it out, sprayed it with dettol - it just won't come out! I have to buy a new pillow as this one was a waste of money. 14 June 2014
Scrunchable comfort I find this pillow both soft and scrunchable - unlike the foam filled variety. It does not exhibit the unpleasant odours characteristic of other similar products. Good value and highly recommended. 01 June 2014
Duck down and feather pillows Having spent about 2 years, and a lot of money trying to find decent pillows, I have finally found them. As with all natural pillows and quilts, you need to air them before using, but mine were on the bed and ready to be slept on in a couple of hours. I am now sleeping really well at night because they're so comfortable. 26 April 2014
Comfort and luxury I have always been a fan of duck or goose down pillows and duvets and nothing else would do for me. I recently replenished on my pillow stock and bought these. They are excellent and very comfortable. Superb sleep on these pillows. As for the other reviews regarding the smell - a good advice was provided by JL staff to air the pillows for a couple of days before using them. The smell disappears with airing, but as I have grown up with bedding filled with natural down, it doesn't bother me. The smell does go away in time and with airing and all bedding from natural materials should be aired regularly. No substitute for synthetics would ever do for me. Thank you John Lewis and I hope you keep this excellent product on your shelves. 02 April 2014
