John Lewis Riley Guest Bed
Good quality but quite an effort to build
We bought this bed for our spare room but wanted a good quality bed that will last. Overall impressions of the bed are very positive, and even the mattresses (which we assumed would be awful as they come 'free') are really quite comfy.
Design is good and if anything is slightly over engineered. Good dowel + bolt construction.
As for the 40minute estimate to put it together - forget it! I'm pretty handy around the house and this took me 2.5hrs.
I also had to drill some 'predrilled' holes that didn't exist.
Overall very positive though.

Lovely piece of furniture
From buying online through to construction this item was a great purchase.
The delivery at 2055 was made by 2 really fun chaps and despite the time they were still very helpful.
Putting it together just needed thought and logical thinking......I managed it on my own whilst my husband cooked dinner.
Friends and family have said how comfortable it is so next week when it's empty I am going to try it out myself!
As always JL has come up trumps....Thank You

poorly fitting mattress
I bought this bed and mattresses 2 years ago. Good quality bed and confortable mattress. However the mattress is clearly too small for the bed: it is two inches too narrow and two inches too short. In addition, only one side of the mattress can be used, as only one side has got padding. For the amount of money I paid I would have expected the mattress to fit as a minimum.

The longest 40 minuets of my life.
This is a good product, sturdy, made of good quality materials and it looks great. However 40 minutes to assemble as per the instructions is unrealistic. I can assure you that I am more than competent in the home assembly stakes. Instructions for main bed are easy to follow but become confused on the secondary bed which is of a more complex design. If I were you I would put aside 2 hours and have something like Test Match Special on the radio to keep you sane . A five star product reduced to 3 because of the assembly issues.

Good looking, comfortable
Pros; Looks nice, my guests say comfortable - can be assembled by one person up to the point of attaching springs to the legs
Cons; I never thought I'd write this, but the instructions are not as clear as Ikea's! Mich01 is right about assembling the legs - I had to call the helpline to confirm the configuration and the screws bearing the strain of the springs are not the right part/inadeqaute for the job
Overall, pleased with purchase and can overcome shortfalls

Good bed - bad instructions & bad hardware
Lovely looking bed and very comfy. However, the bolts and screws and Allen key are inadequate and of bad quality; the top bed, once assembled, is wobbly and needs washers to keep it stable.
The instructions are good superficially but hopeless on closer inspection; eg they don't mention that one spring-assisted leg belongs at the top end of the bed and the other at the bottom end of the bed.
Furthermore, the description of the screws and bolts with H1 and H2 are totally wrong and basically one has to find out by trial and error how it all fits together.
Furthermore (bis), I do not believe that the screws holding the springs are nearly strong enough and will break in a very short time; it looked as if they had started bending as soon as pressure was put on them.
Looking through comments made by other customers, I see that the legs on the 'spare' bed are not strong and can break, see comment on 09 Dec. 2012 and on 06 Sept. 2011. I wonder how John Lewis resolved these customers' problems. Did John Lewis replace the broken parts or spare bed? What can I expect if I experience similar problems?
I assume other potential purchasers of this guest bed will be interested in knowing JL's response to my questions.

Single Beds OK but difficult to make into Double Bed
No problem with the quality of the beds and no problem with assembly but we wanted to provide two spare single beds but also a spare double bed by putting them together. The matresses provided are a few inches smaller than the bed frames so when the beds are put together, there is a gap of about 4 inches between the two matresses. We ended up buying a foam strip to fill the gap.

We got this bed last Friday and my husband assembled it really quickly. The only help he needed was to stretch the slats to the pilot holes-this bit is definitely a two man job as you have to stretch them really tight. The main bed seems solid but I'm not sure the legs on the hideaway bed would cope with regular use. Our only disappointment is with the narrowness of the oak. When you enlarge the photograph, the corner posts look quite chunky and this is the look we wanted. In actual fact the head and foot boards are quite thin, like cheaper versions you can buy. Having said that, my 3 year old loves it and has slept soundly every night and we had a guest sleep on the hideaway bed this weekend who had no complaints.
