John Lewis Spectrum DAB/FM Clock Radio
Don't buy this!
I'd really like whoever decided to stock this product to try using it for a few days. From my experience night one would be spent grappling with the display which, as others have pointed out, is FAR TOO BRIGHT. So bright, it woke me up a couple of times. The only way to stop this is to not have any time display at all, which is what we tried for night two., but it means that if you want to see the time you have to press the clock - not that handy for my husband on the other side of the bed.
I could go on .. The other fails for me, in addition to the above, is not being able to see what the time is if you're listening to the radio, and having the main radio control button hidden at the back.
We lasted four days and then i took it back and paid an extra £25 for the Pure Siesta...

This is the first time I have had to complain about a John Lewis product, but it really does not do what it says on the box, or what I expected it to do!
1. As others have said, it is far too bright even when dimmed - the room was filled with an intrusive blue light which woke me up several times until I covered it up.
2. Two of us tried for 3 hours to programme the pre-set stations and failed completely. The instructions in the manual appeared to be useless.
3. I was disappointed the display did not show the time, station, and programme information all at the same time, as other DAB radios.
4. Did not like the on/off button being at the back
I did like having a headphone socket and sound quality was good.
But overall, not a good buy and I am returning it for a refund. I am sorry John Lewis but I don't think this product is up to your usual standard.

Good for the price
I had problems with the brightness of the display for the first night. But unlike the other reviewers, I read the instructions and found that you can set the display to dim automatically so that you don't get kept awake by a bright blue glow.
If you press the 'select' button whilst the radio is on, it will show the time.
I found it fiddly to set the alarm, but having got it set it works well. The radio fades in, rather than starting at a high volume, which is a nice touch.

Bend down to read, too bright, NO CLOCK with Radio ON - "Dar"
Loved the look of this radio when I saw it in the shop. I had been looking for a compact DAB Radio Alarm to replace our Roberts analogue one. This unit looked just great in the store in Leicester.
However its such a shame that the folk who designed it did not think it through or use it properly.
1. It is not possible to stand up near this radio and read the time, one has to bend down to read it.
2. At night its way too BRIGHT. You can see to navigate a normally very dark room with it easily, however because it it LCD with back-light it is quite tough read.
3. And here is the BIG ONE. When the radio is selected the device lets you know what DAB station you are listening to and will not permanently display the time. So if you choose, as we do, to wake up to radio the clock is no longer showing after it turns on the radio - STUPID. The radio station will not change but the time does relentlessly - EVERY MINUTE. So waking up in bed in the morning its not possible to see the time if the radio is on - "Err Dar"
What a real shame, the size is great, the sound is very good, the tuner seems sensitive but the display technology is poor and the software\firmware needs an overhaul.
Mine is going back.
JL - you need to take this off sale until this is resolved. Have a look at the other reviews. You have an amazing brand and this product is hurting it....... Shame.

unfit for purpose
I saw this in store and thought that it was just what I wanted to replace my old clock radio whose display is far too bright and the analogue radio no longer works. Apart from there being no instructions in the box, it was not difficult to plug in and get started. WHAT a disappointment. not only is the display far too bright even putting it on to dimmer, which doesn't seem to work anyway, I couldn't even read the time. I have just been online and have read the other reviews which concur with me completely. I wish I had looked at theses before I bought the item. now I have to trek back into the store to get a refund.

Far too bright
Cons: The light is far too bright as in other review i have to cover it up at night as the glow feels like there is a light in in the room and wakes me up if i turn to face the radio.
Pros: Easy to set up
Nice and compact with a variety of colours.

Useless for a bedroom
First impressions were good, I thought it was great to find one in teal to match my bedroom!
As others have said though, the display if far too bright. Even on the lowest dimmer setting you can still see the glow through closed eyes and it lights up your whole room at night. The only way we could sleep with it was to cover it up, which defeats the object somewhat.
Also the radio reception didn't seem very good. We're not in the strongest signal area, but we couldn't get anything on DAB and many stations on FM we couldn't get either.
It went straight back.

Why no clock (when there's radio)?
The other reviews cover all of the points. But just to add another one in case JL are reading...
Great clock radio but with a couple of fairly major flaws.
Good looks, great sound, sturdy build quality, nice flexibility of alarm options, general features and value.
However, when the radio is on, either manually or via an alarm, there is no clock to see! A fundamental flaw in a device designed with the express purpose doing both. Also, even on the dimmest setting, the display is really too bright.
If anyone from JL (Joshua below for example?) is reading this, is there any chance at all that a software update will be released that will address these issues? If not then I'm afraid I'll be returning mine (and wishing I'd read these reviews first instead of being wowed in the shop!).
